By the end of this class, students will be able to:
- Identify some major Greek Gods and Monsters of Greek Mythology.
- Discuss the characters and plot developments at length.
- Evaluate the dangers that Percy and his friends face.
- Describe differences and similarities between ancient Greek and Modern societies.
- Create their own complex short stories and narratives.
- Further develop their reading skills and techniques.

I have spent 6 years as a professional teacher and professor of English. I have an MA in Education. An avid reader and self-directed learner, historical fiction has always been one of my favorite genres. 

Reading such books has lead me to research and discover where the boundaries of truth and fiction lay. In looking at the past, we can see how society and their ideas have developed and shaped modern times. In turn by studying historical fiction novels, you can see where our current societal issues and modern ideals shape how we choose to look at the past.

A list of possible assignments will be given. These daily quest assignments include such things as summaries, character mapping, timeline sequencing, sentence correction, word definitions, etc. Students will be given the option to pursue whichever assignments they like. The only assignment that is truly expected of them is to read the chapters before class each week. Those who have already read the book are encouraged to re-read the passages to refresh their minds on what happened. 

Completing assignments will give them achievements and xp (experience points) that will build their reading comprehension skills and also help them to level up in their quest to be all powerful!

Students will also have the option to be working on a self-directed project of their own choosing. This project is open ended. It can be a comic book that they create, a costume or cosplay based on a character in the book, fashioning their own shield stylized by descriptions in the text and ancient armor, a diorama of a scene that might occur, or wherever their imagination takes them! I will be answering questions and interacting with students on their projects in the direct messaging within the classroom. Those who choose to do a final project will be able to present their project on the final day of class.

Students will be assessed using XP or experience points. As their XP grows, they will level up. Individual assignments will be corrected, but the emphasis will be placed on effort and information rather than perfection.

Students will need their own copy of 'The Lightning Thief' (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1) by Rick Riordan.
