Get $20 off my class "Novel Reading and Discussion - Piecing Me Together, by Renee Watson" with coupon code SNYDERSUMMER20 until Jul 31, 2023.

In this course, students will read the novel, Piecing Me Together, by Renee Watson, a story of a young woman trying to find her way through many of the issues that are unique to our current national climate as well as to children and young adults with many of the same experiences.

Topics to be discussed are: Racial Diversity in America, What does Privilege Mean to You?, Reading Literature and Responding with Intention, Labels and Self-Esteem.

Each week, students will be provided with guiding questions to answer with their assigned readings to discuss during the next class session. Students will do most of the reading on their own, but will have their own devoted time to voice their own opinions and reactions to their readings. I will request that students submit their guiding questions answers each week for my review and responses.

The course will consist of my overview of the reading from the previous week, general discussion on themes from the reading and then each student will provide their own brief summary/impressions/questions from the reading for everyone to consider and answer or discuss.

I will provide guiding questions each week for students to review and create written responses for them to use during the following class and to submit to me to review. I will also preview each week's readings with a brief book talk at the end of each class session.

Schedule:
Week 1 - Introduction to the novel, Piecing Me Together, with a mini-lesson on literary terms students should be familiar with during the 8 weeks that we are reading and discussing.

Weeks 2 - 7 - These weeks will all follow the same format:
1. Brief overview of the reading that was completed during the week leading up to class.
2. Teacher introduction of themes from the weekly reading.
3. Student round-robin discussion on their thoughts, interpretations and thoughts on discussion questions.
4. Brief teacher preview of next reading assignment and distribution of new discussion questions.

Week 2 - Discussion of Chapters 1-9, Character Discussion and initial impression of the novel.
Week 3 - Discussion of Chapters 10-20
Week 4 - Discussion of Chapters 21-32
Week 5 - Discussion of Chapters 33-42
Week 6 - Discussion of Chapters 43-56
Week 7 - Discussion of Chapters 57-69
Week 8 - Discussion of Chapters 70-76, Final Discussion on the novel as well as class review on the main themes present, in their opinion.

***Chapters are short, fast reads...some are only a few sentences to a few pages.

Students will be reading about, and discussing, sensitive topics that are currently at the forefront of the national conversation regarding racial inequalities and social justice. The story is told from the perspective of a young black girl and her attempts to understand her identity and her place in society as a member of the various groups she has been assigned to by society. This is a story of a young person attempting to break free from those labels while also trying to understand them.

I have been a public school teacher for several years and many students struggle with their own personal identities. I have witnessed that all students can develop a great deal of empathy by understanding their place in society and how all of us are connected. As a middle and high school English teacher, I have found that most students have insecurities and struggles with their identity. Reading about struggles similar to their own help students become aware of these shared struggles through classroom discussions. My years as a teacher have often been in schools with diverse groups of students from all walks of life and these types of stories, I have found, help students see that they aren't alone in these feelings.
