Playing the piano is fun! Music Academy: Piano Club is a great place for you to learn to play the piano and read music in a supportive community. In this class, you will have personalized instruction and plenty of chances to practice. You'll also have chances to play songs for the other kids and listen to their songs. We will actively practice being a positive creative learning community, supporting each other by listening and showing kindness. We'll be cheering for each other as we learn and share what we've learned! In each class, we will: - warm up our piano fingers - have a chance to play songs for the others - learn a song individually with personalized teacher support - practice your song on your own piano - learn or review a music concept Music concepts we will focus on: Week of 8/22: note names (pitches) Week of 8/29: note lengths (durations) Week of 9/5: the speed of the beat (tempo) Week of 9/12: 5-finger patterns (5-note scales) Note: We will review and build on these topics in later weeks so that students can continue to build their knowledge of music. Songs for this class may be chosen from a student's own piano book or from a book in the Faber series. Students will need to purchase their own physical or digital copy of the book they use for learning songs. During the first 40 minutes of each class time, we will learn the lesson material. The last 10 minutes will be open for sharing. During the sharing time, students can share a song they've been working on, or a special interest (like another instrument they are learning, or another creative talent they are developing). Students can also answer ice-breaker-type questions, like "What is your favorite kind of music." This time is designed to help the students feel the friendship and encouragement of others who share their interests. About me: In 30 years of teaching music in private lessons and public elementary schools, the most incredible moments for me have occurred when students enjoyed learning the music and felt positive personal connections. This is what I hope to bring to the many young people learning from home or hoping for more meaningful music experiences. I am positive, upbeat, and relaxed, and invite students to join in as they feel comfortable. If you are looking for a connective, nurturing, musical environment for your child or children, I hope you'll join us!

Music and learning materials used in our class will be co-selected by teacher and student. I will assume that any music or materials provided by the student have been approved by a parent. I recommend that students and parents have open communication about the music that the student wants to work on in the class.
Students may have the opportunity to utilize digital materials on a music publisher's website. Links to access the songs will be shared in the classroom site. Students will not need to create an account or log in to the music publisher's website to access those songs.
受講に必要なもの
As a student, you will need your own piano or keyboard. In addition, you will need to own a copy of the sheet music for any songs you want to learn. In most cases, a piano book in the student's level is the best option for having a variety of songs to learn. Many piano learning books are $10-15. We can use music and learning materials that you already have or I can suggest materials for you to purchase. I also have some digital materials that I may use to enrich your learning journey. Links to access those materials will be shared in the classroom site. You will not need to create an account or log in to the music publisher's website to access those songs.

教師の専門知識と資格
As a university-trained music teacher, I have learned to teach music as an art form, so that people with all kinds of life experiences and beliefs can participate in making music objectively, in a safe space. I absolutely respect learner diversity, and welcome feedback on specific sensitive topics (i.e. family or cultural beliefs that make certain music sensitive). Conversations about sensitivity will be treated with the highest discretion.
