In this class, we'll work on creating our own chess sets in Google Slides.   They'll develop graphic design skills by creating functional art!  Once their chess set is complete, they may make their own copy to save.  They can then use this copy to play with friends or family anywhere in the world.  (This works best if they are logged into a Google account).  If we have enough time at the end, they can start a game with their new friends!

I originally tried teaching this class in one sitting, but realized very quickly that this is best done in two parts to give everyone enough time to really make something special!  Here are the two parts:

Part 1: We'll start with choosing a theme.  Think favorite animal, food, book, movie, toy, really anything!  Everyone will get their own blank Google Slide to work with.  I'll be able to see in real time what they are doing and help when needed. Then we'll create our backgrounds by searching for images that go with our theme.  We'll choose a chess board, create our buttons, and solidify our background.  Then we'll talk about and begin the process of finding our pieces.  

Homework: Everyone will find the pieces they want to use using Google Image Search, and copy and paste the into the appropriate place.  Parent supervision recommended!

Part 2: We'll take the pieces we found, copy and paste the right amount, then adjust the color so we have two distinct sides.  If anyone got stumped on finding the right piece, I'll help!  We'll learn them how to use the chat, the buttons for a turn being over, and to indicate that they are thinking.  We'll go over how to create your own copy of this, and how to share it with friends.  

**Please note that manipulating images using a touch screen is very difficult, especially on iPads.  While the Zoom portion of the class can be accessed from any device, the actual building of the chess set should be done using a mouse or trackpad for best results.
