Read with us as the Magic Tree House whisks Jack and Annie all the way to the frozen Arctic! Will they be able to solve the riddle before they get iced themselves? In each class, we will be reading and discussing the story "Polar Bears Past Bedtime." We will go over vocabulary words and complete an activity in class, and there will be comprehension homework after each class. We will read the chapters together in class. Before each class I will ask for volunteers to read and I will write those names down. Every single student who wants to read will have a chance to read out loud. I will not call on children who are not comfortable reading, but I will encourage the students to have their name on my read-a-loud list. If there are no students who feel comfortable reading, I will read the chapter. This class provides a good opportunity for students to continue to practice reading out loud and discussing a book in a small group. It also gives them a chance to practice reading a chapter book and practice reading fluency. At the end of the book, students will make a poster or similar project to share what they have learned and enjoyed. An example of a book project is in the classroom materials, along with the reading journal and a special (optional) "challenge" activity. I would recommend finding a small group of friends to take this class together so that they can discuss the book outside of class. 5 minutes- go over homework 10 minutes- Read-a-loud, discussion 5 minutes- comprehension activity Day 1: Chapters 1 and 2- All about Jack, All about the seal hunter Day 2: Chapters 3 and 4- All about Annie Day 3: Chapters 5 and 6- Choose a character and decide on a gift for that character. What would make a good gift? Why? Day 4: Chapters 7 and 8- My favorite part of the story so far is.... Day 5: Chapters 9 and 10- What would you change about the story? Day 6: Share book projects and optional challenge activity.
