Why do we need to simplify algebraic expressions? Because it makes everything else we do to the expression, much easier! Our answers will often be require to be in the "simplest form." When we simplify an expression, we reduce the size of the expression without changing its value. We will be asked to simplify expressions and equations throughout our study of Math (even beyond Algebra!) so it is a very important skill to master. In this class we will demystify what an algebraic expression is and what the different types of terms are. We will use a free, online interactive that shows us how "collecting like terms" is analogous to "collecting like things" in the real-world. We will follow a particular order of operations while we simplify an expression and we will work through several examples together. Students will be provided a set of notes, a link to the online interactive and a problem set, with solutions.
学習到達目標
Students will know how to:
-identify an algebraic expression
-categorize different types of terms
-identify like terms
-combine like terms using the correct order of operations.

Hi!
My name is Mark Ehrenreich. I am an electrical engineer and my calling in life is to help students of all ages build their understanding, confidence and resilience in math, physics, chemistry and music. I have over 20 years of professional experience as a teacher, trainer and tutor.
When my daughter, Sunny, was born in 2015, I started my own tutoring business, A Guide by Your Side, in order to focus on my ability to connect with students and help them become better learners. I've tutored students from Elementary school age through Graduate school.
From 2016 and 2019 I was also a trainer for Community-Matters.org, a non-profit organization leading the way in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and violence prevention. As a Safe School Ambassador (SSA) trainer, I engaged groups of students and teachers to focus on skills and actions meant to reduce bullying and violence in schools in a safe, healthy way.
Between 2001 and 2015 I worked as Educational Engineer for Cisco Systems, where I traveled internationally, teaching classes on engineering and technology.
My goal is to guide students into becoming resilient learners and creative problem solvers. I show students how to develop a mindset that embraces challenge and can recognize mistakes as excellent learning opportunities. I help students develop critical thinking and perseverance into problem solving strategies that they own. Skills that last a lifetime.
I study the latest in learning and cognitive science to better help students develop into self-driven learners. I incorporate carefully selected, quality resources to maximize the learning experience.
I use visual, interactive games, digital manipulatives, and math application simulators to better illuminate the topic or concept at hand. These types of resources provide a visual and kinesthetic connection between the real world and the numbers and symbols that make up math and science. These modern tools help students retain more of what they study.
I firmly believe that we can all THINK ourselves smarter, that by challenging ourselves to think more deeply, creatively and critically, that we unlock within ourselves an increased desire to learn and understand more about the world that surrounds us.
