Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more. In this course we will learn about the history of human rights, the governing bodies that oversee global human rights, and learn about current events that are impacted by human rights norms and agreements. Students will explore current debates in the human rights and peace keeping communities, and will be encouraged to critically analyze intergovernmental organizations, governments, and civilian efforts to maintain human rights globally. This course will be taught with high level texts, writing prompts, and debate topics, preparing students for college-level international studies. In this ongoing course, Ms. C (who recently completed a Masters at Columbia with a focus on Peace & Human Rights Education) will engage learners in lessons, activities, and discussion around global peace & human rights.
