Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park
The Crossover by Kwame Alexander

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry deals with racism in the Jim Crow South.

The Graveyard Book is about a boy who is orphaned when his parents are murdered, though the murder is not talked about at length or in a graphic way at all. 

Prairie Lotus deals with racism, sexism, lynching, and contains a scene where two men in town make suggestive comments about the main character. However, this is a middle grade reader and these are done in a way that is entirely age appropriate for middle schoolers. 

The Crossover contains the death of a main character and may not be suitable for sensitive readers.
