Students will unpack the concept of “Leadership as Influence” identify what it means to be a leader and an influencer. They will come away with an action plan of what their leadership and influence might look like in the spaces within which they engage. Over the course of 6 weeks, the girls will struggle with the concept of leadership development and what it means to be both a leader and an influencer: They will i) Collaborate and share their ideas and experiences around leadership and leaders. ii) Discuss how leadership traits are identified and developed. iii) Identify their leadership traits and explore how they can use these traits to inform their lives and impact their communities. iv) Create a profile of themselves as a leader and influencer around the statement of “Why Me, Why Lead, Why the Need, Why Now” (Why NOT Me) The class will have a small group discussion format and the breakout room feature in ZOOM will be used to facilitate that. Students will be assigned the following roles within the small group setting; E.g. Recorder; time keeper, and a reporter. All students will be expected to be active participants within the class. The following is a breakdown of the focus of each week's session: Week 1: Introductions; students will complete a pre-assessment survey to identify leadership strengths and challenges and share what they hope to gain from the class Week 2: Results of previous week's survey will be reviewed while students respond to the following prompt: What is leadership? Name some leaders; what makes them leaders? (question is it ok to use a Google form to conduct the the above mentioned survey from week 1? I will review it during week 2's class ) Homework: Reflect on Youth Leadership come to class next week prepared to share your thoughts and opinions. Week 3: Review previous week's homework. If yes why? If not why not? Homework: Reflect on the challenges of leadership, identify/name some of those challenges. how can they be overcome? Week 5: Continue working on leadership profiles In groups depending on numbers students will begin sharing their leadership profiles. Week 6: Students will continue to share leadership profiles Share their main take-aways from the class, identify areas of growth etc.

I am an experienced inspirational educational leader, workshop developer, researcher, and presenter on the areas of Structural Inequities; Educator Efficacy; and Lessons in Leadership. An educator with 30 plus years experience, I have been a classroom teacher, teacher leader coach, and I currently serves as a school principal.
I have taken my skill sets in the areas of learning, leadership, and change, beyond the schoolhouse and have helped organizations to design systems and structures that support and advance their leadership teams.
I have taught a summer leadership class for young Girls of Color for the past four years and have had both students and parents share how impactful the class has been for them.
