3 lessons//3 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Why do minerals fluoresce?
Dive into the reasons why minerals can be fluorescent. What does this mean? Is there a reaction taking place to make this occur? We will collaborate and share our ideas together. Introduction to the Mohs hardness scale with collection samples to reinforce understanding. * Time for sharing specimens in each session.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
What is crystal habit?
We will take a look at various crystals and understand why and how they form. This is where geometry can come into our discussion. Students will explore together and gain understanding about heat, pressure, temperature, and other reasons behind crystal habit. * Time for sharing specimens in each session.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
What is a native mineral?
What are native minerals? We will investigate how this mineral forms and why. How does the field of chemistry relate to geology and native minerals? *Time for sharing specimens in each session.
Students will have the opportunity to share their questions and ideas together in class as we explore many unique geology topics and research specimens together. They will be encouraged to work as a team and help each other with guided questions and discussions to learn and share their specimens together.
*No prior knowledge of geology is required, just the desire to explore and learn together!
They will each have time to share their favorite "3" specimens each day. Time permitting they can share additional specimens with the class.
As a homeschool mom, rock lover, and member of a local rockhound club with my son for many years, I love to explore the wonderful world of Geology. Each unique specimen that has formed over time brings great fascination and excitement to figure out the where, why, and how it formed.
I would love to uncover and encourage your student to dive deeper into their knowledge of rocks, minerals, crystals, and gems. Being close to the Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems has provided and truly expanded my knowledge in this field.
This is a class to encourage the students to explore their interests and spark curiosity as we are discussing the various topics. No prior knowledge of Geology is required, just the desire to explore and learn together!
宿題が提供されます
There will be periodic mystery challenges to guess various specimens for the next class. These are completely optional and are a fun way to explore the field of Geology together.
授業以外に週あたり 0 - 1 時間の学習が期待されます
評価が提供されます
Personalized feedback can be provided on learners engagement and optional assignments.
成績が提供されます
Bring along your specimen of rock, gem, crystal, or anything geology-related you'd like to share with the class. Students are not required to share a specimen as they may want to just explore and begin learning about this field.
