In ongoing lessons, I teach using classic children's authors like Roald Dahl, CS Lewis and Mary Hodgson Burnett. Each week we explore a different author and build vocabulary, grammar and writing composition skills. Using a specially chosen extract to showcase the author’s skill, I show all learners how to use the skill in their own writing. While following my guided examples, learners can ask questions. I give feedback throughout the lesson as well as tips for further improvement. There are also lots of opportunities for speaking, listening and sharing in each lesson. My friendly-but-focused style helps learners to build confidence as well as friendships. Where possible, I try to include some ‘do-it-yourself’ (DIY) time at the end of the lesson, where learners are free to use their own creative flourishes to finish their writing, for example, describing the weather using a simile. After a few lessons, learners tend to bring examples of work completed at school where they used skills learnt in our lessons. Over a few sessions, learners master a range of writing skills so they can express themselves clearly. This is my aim for our lessons: to help your learner to conquer a blank page. I have been a qualified (certified) primary (elementary) school teacher in England for over 20 years. During that time, I have taught grammar, writing composition and Latin to hundreds of children. I mix classic literature and old-fashioned grammar with a friendly approach to help all learners find success.
In addition to this, I am finishing a master’s degree in mathematics with education at the University of Cambridge. I specialised in the teaching of abstract concepts and understanding how teachers can help pupils to excel in mathematics at school.
I am dedicated to teaching children the knowledge and skills they need for academic success. I am passionate about hard-working children whose academic potential is unnoticed in busy classrooms.レビュー
