This is a 1 On 1 Tutoring session designed to help Junior High/High School students with their English Assignments/homework/essays. The top main concerns are using commas, writing essays, or answering questions related to a novel that is being read. Students need encouragement, support, and most importantly tips on how to complete their work. With respect to essay writing, we focus on how to write powerful topic sentences and memorable conclusions (i.e thesis/clincher statements). Moreover, we teach about the importance of transitional phrases when starting a new paragraph or within paragraphs. My teaching style is all about having fun, boosting confidence through courage. I teach students to write what is inside their hearts and minds regardless of mistakes or grammar issues. The goal is to build their confidence one step at a time, but I also teach them how to edit the mistakes they make by identifying complete sentences (thoughts) and by reviewing grammar rules. In other words, I applaud their efforts and elevate their performance each time.

Students will learn about all of the components an essay contains and the different types of essays that exist. Below are some of the objectives that will be achieved.
1. Write creative and attractive topic sentences
2. Define what a topic sentence is and its importance
3. Review various topic sentence examples
4. Write a one pronged thesis statement
5. Develop a three-pronged thesis statement
6. Talk about the key elements/components of an essay
7. List 10 transitional phrases to be used in or within paragraphs
8. Explain the purpose of the conclusion paragraph
Week 1: Discuss the why behind essays and develop attractive topic sentences
Week 2: Define what a thesis statement is and practice writing a one pronged thesis statement
Week 3. Review sample essays with a three-pronged essay and write a paragraph on any topic of choice
Week 4. Develop the second and third paragraphs using transitional phrases.
Week 5: Work on the conclusion statement by reiterating/summarizing the essay
As this is a private lesson, the student will also be supported on writing assignments that they are working on so that they can apply the knowledge learned in class. Moreover, each week will change depending on the need. For example, if the student wants to focus on a different type of essay (i.e. visual response, comparative essay etc), I will adjust the class in real-time to support the need the student has.
The flexibility provided is important to ensure the needs of the learner are being met.
