このクラスで学べること

Updated 4/9/21 Based on parent and student feedback I have made this class a little longer to give us more discussion time after we cover our topics. I also offer a biweekly discussion group on cybersafety topics by request only. Please note that this class can run over if students are doing a lot of sharing. I encourage them to share and will extend class time.

Parents and Students, protect yourselves by taking this class. Cybersafety is the safe and responsible use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Your computer is not the only device that poses risks, rather it is any medium that transmits personal information, including phones and other electronic devices. Most individuals do not realize that just forwarding a single picture that someone else sends you, in many states, can lead to felony charges and having to register as a Sex Offender. Even juveniles can face these charges. Currently one in six pre-teens/teens admits to having sent inappropriate texts via cell phones. Schools see students losing scholarships and acceptances to colleges every year. Let this class help your student avoid making decisions that can permanently alter their life.

In class students will learn how criminal actions on the internet become illegal, common cyber mistakes, discuss cyberbullying and what the steps to take if they are a victim, learn about various scams and different actions they can take for protection, and learn how to protect themselves from hackers including completing a STEM activity where students become cryptographers. Parents and Students will be given a CyberSafety contract to discuss and sign at the conclusion of our class, as well as a few other important handouts and links that parents. I will also provide a video for students to review post class with their families (optional) where they can look at and discuss the mistakes other students are making online. Please note this class is for beginners and for different types of learners, if your student is already cyber savvy, you made need a more advanced course.

Now is the time to have this discussion with your student. When it comes to cybersafety, you can't be too cautious, and this class tackles those hard conversations.

Topics include:
1. What not to post on social media.
2. Personal Information and Strangers
3. Receiving inappropriate pictures
4. Cyber Bullying
5. Steps to take when confronted with inappropriate cyber information.
6. Downloads, purchasing, click-bait, Man in the Middle Scam
7. The 1-800 virus and other scams
8. Gaming Safety, Reporting and Addiction
9. STEM activity Cryptography: Students will learn how to send encrypted messages
学習到達目標
Students will have the opportunity to learn not only from the instructor but from each other as well. The first part of the class is introductions and then we will discuss what each student is currently using in terms of technology and what access they have to the internet. From there we will go over multiple topics and students will have an opportunity to interact with one another.

I am a retired Professor and High School teacher. I am also a practicing attorney in New York State. I taught Advanced Placement US Government, Advanced Placement Comparative Government and traditional High School Government for over ten years and was the History Department Chair. I also taught Criminal Justice at the collegiate level for over ten years.
I know it is important to introduce a fact based, non biased lesson to students that will foster discussions with their family and peers. Recently I had the opportunity to teach Cyber Safety workshops with an Educational Counselor in NY. I was in awe over the lack of student knowledge regarding the appropriate behaviors when sending out texts, photos and posting online. It is my hope to help students protect themselves and avoid dangerous and legal situations.
