Students will participate in a flexible course where we study "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl. During the first six weeks, students will read and analyze the reading to show their understanding and comprehension of the material. Dahl's novel is full of important symbolism. While it is a short novel with a Lexile level of the novel is 810L (ranging from fifth grade to ninth grade), the level of analysis that accompanies the reading is better suited to the high middle school to middle high school grades. I encourage students who are new to analysis or struggle with it or students who are reading above their grade level to attend this class as the reading lends itself to learning analysis and symbolism.

During the film portion of the course, students will analyze the film to compare and contrast it from the novel. So much of the baseline analysis that will need to be complete will be accomplished during our reading weeks. Students will view the film and will write a three-paragraph essay explaining how the film is both similar and different than the novel.

The weekly schedule will focus on:

     - Establishing Characters (Analysis Sheet)
     - Discussing Character Symbolism (Classroom Board)
