In this interactive class, students will explore math as it relates to business. How do you decide what to charge for an item? What kind of taxes do I need to collect or pay? Learners can come with a business idea, or use an imaginary business when it comes to solving problems. Week 1: Introduction: what is profit and how is it calculated? (I.e. gross and net revenue, costs, labor, etc.) Week 2: Calculations for pricing a product or service (i.e. materials, labor, overhead, transaction fees, etc.) Week 3: More profit discussion: wages, taxes, financing, how to reduce start up and ongoing business costs. No off-Outschool resources are needed. Class format is primarily conversational with lots of interaction and some screen sharing by the teacher. Students should come with paper and pen, they may bring have a calculator. We'll use my custom Business Math worksheet, but you do not need to print it. We'll use these math skills: multiplication, division, fractions and percentages. Please ensure your student is comfortable using these skills, either mentally, with pen and paper, or a calculator. Business math problems often function like word problems. For example, it costs A + B + C to make an item, plus D for labor, so how much is the cost basis (A + B + C + D) and how much should you charge (2D = E), to make a profit (E-D = F)?) If your learner struggles with converting word problems into equations, this can be tricky (business math is tricky for MANY folks! Including me, even though I've been doing it for many years! This is why we do lots of practice problems and go slowly.) Please note I am not a trained math teacher, so this is more of a math/business concepts class than a math tutorial, although we do practice math quite a bit. Feel free to reach out with any questions. Please check the full schedule for class, as there may be variations in how often the class meets per week. PLEASE NOTE: This class will only run with 2+ learners, due to the interactive class style. If class cannot run, I will message you about changing the start date, a refund, a transfer, or other options. A note about my classroom guidelines: Kids can be wiggly, distracted, and sensory seeking, and that's totally normal! I try to create spaces that are supportive, cozy, and interactive. Because some behaviors can be distracting for classmates, I will share a basic set of guidelines at the beginning of class. I want to make sure that all students are cared for, and reducing on-camera distractions is part of that. Guidelines: 1) Video on or off (after verification)! Discussions can be verbal or in *on-topic* chats. 2) Be respectful; don't interrupt; raise your (physical or digital) hand! Don't intentionally distract other students (e.g. putting things directly in front of the camera) 3) Because they can be quite distracting, this class does not allow video filters, avatars, or background changes (except blur). 4) If necessary, I will move a disruptive student to the waiting room. If appropriate, I will let them back in for another chance to stay in class respectfully. If this occurs and you have questions, please reach out to Support. 5) Any racist, homophobic, body shaming, violent, or inappropriate language/images will result in removal from class. If this happens, you may email outschool@support.com with any questions. A few other notes: - Please click your meeting link 2-3 minutes early so we can start class on time! - Per OS policy, if there are no students in the classroom 10 minutes after class starts, I will close the classroom. (If you're having tech issues trying to enter the classroom, send a message or post in the classroom, so I know you are there!) - If the day/time no longer works for you, please let me know ASAP - at least 72 hours before the first class. If I can, I will transfer you to a different section. A transfer might not be possible if it results in the class dropping below the learner minimum. - Class recordings are automatically shared, unless there is a safety issue, and take a few minutes to show up in the classroom. FYI: OS policy is that a learner can't watch a video until they have attended class, unless they are a verified learner. - Learners are encouraged to advocate for how they would like to participate. - If your learner needs adult help (e.g. adult on screen, adult answers for the child or facilitates answers, adult takes notes, etc) please let me know in advance per OS parent guidance.
