>>>PLEASE READ BEFORE ENROLLING: The live portion of this class consists of two 45 minute-long, fast-paced, lecture-based presentations, with Q&A breaks as time permits -- you know your learner(s) best, so please consider if the session length and format is a good fit for them.*** Although the Nile Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibious amphibious) is extirpated (locally extinct) in Egypt today, they once inhabited the northern reaches of the Nile River where they were both feared and worshipped by the ancient Egyptians. This session will introduce this complicated cultural history, as we view examples of ancient Egyptian art and artifacts which depict hippos (and hippo deities!). We will also survey the natural history of the subspecies itself, including its basic biology and evolutionary history, when and why it became extinct in Egypt, and where it can still be found today. There will also be instructions provided for an OPTIONAL art activity which students are invited to try on their own and share their creations on the Classroom board. :) This class is part of the ANIMALS IN WORLD ART HISTORY series. This class will meet live for two consecutive sessions. The format will consist of primarily slides accompanied by lecture, but there will be opportunities to ask questions, and of course the Classroom board will be available for open discussion before and after class as well. Students who choose to try the optional art activity can also post and discuss their creations to the board.

I teach from a zoological perspective, and as such just like in my regular science classes natural animal behaviors and bodily functions may come up in the course of discussion. I also do not censor works of art.
受講に必要なもの
Lesson materials are provided for free via the classroom, either as downloadable printables/files or links to online resources (web pages, videos, articles, etc.). Students are free to choose their own paper type and coloring supplies for the optional art activity.

I'm a naturalist with a focus on zoology, and mainly teach animal science courses...but as part of my longstanding interests in both the animal kingdom AND art and culture, I began conducting independent research on how animals have been depicted in art around the world, and am now back in graduate school working on a second Masters thesis about it! :) In conjunction with my current research, I am now offering this series of short courses on different subjects in Animals in World Art History in addition to my regular zoology classes.
I also have nearly two decades experience as a home education advocate, including homeschooling my own children from preschool through high school. I am a big proponent of flexible learning, individualized education, and supporting fellow neurodiverse learners, so please don't hesitate to reach out to me with requests for accommodations or additional resources. We all learn in our own way and time, but everyone should have the chance to learn about how cool animals are! 😎
