This ongoing class lasts for 40 minutes and follows the Foundation curriculum. During the session, students will learn about letters and their sounds, including both capital and lowercase letters, as well as consonants and vowels. No prior knowledge is required, as the class will cover phonemic awareness, phonics, word study, high-frequency words, reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension strategies, handwriting, and spelling for reading levels A through E. Each class will begin with a phonics alphabet song led by Owl, where students will vocalize the sound of each letter. After that, students will identify the current day and date of the class and the 1-3 letters that will be the focus for that day. Activities will include crafts related to the letter(s), sound recognition, story retelling, handwriting skills, and a review of letter-sound correspondence. Students will also learn to identify primary consonants and short vowels, name and write corresponding letters when given sounds for consonants and short vowels, and print all lowercase letters. This instruction will progress to sight words and reading levels A-E. The circle time schedule will be displayed using a screen-shared PowerPoint presentation that includes hyperlinks to various songs from YouTube, including contributions from The Singing Walrus and Jack Hartmann, which will be used in class. The teacher will share the PowerPoint from their screen with the students, and the hyperlinks will be embedded in the slides. Lessons will feature videos from Jack Hartmann, The Singing Walrus, and Netbox, all of which will be screen-shared during class. Students do not need their own subscriptions, as the teacher will provide access through their own accounts. Additionally, there will be times when students will need paper and coloring materials for activities. The teacher will provide pictures with words that students can trace. Scissors and glue will not be necessary for constructing books; students will only need assistance in folding them. Students are expected to participate in class by answering questions, moving to the music, and completing their books. The teacher encourages questions and comments, and students are expected to treat the teacher with respect and courtesy.

As a dedicated special education teacher with experience in teaching children (birth-sixth grade) with special needs, preschoolers, and my children, I know that writing is an important skill. Writing, forming letters, connecting lines, and connecting it all together can be hard. I have worked with students who have limited fine motor skills, gross motor delays, or sensory or neurological delays, for over 20 years. In the public schools, I worked with occupational therapists to develop students' individual education plans in part, to help them learn to write, specifically to help them develop their eye-hand movements and give them a foundation for reading. I generally prefer to one on one or in small groups as much as possible. This allows me to get to know the students and their needs. Cursive writing is a foundational skill for reading because it requires children to write from left to right, so that the letters will join in proper sequence and with proper spacing, making their writing easier to read. I also use aids (pencil grips, play dough, small balls, and specialized materials that I have developed, with the help of occupational therapists, to help students to write. In my capacity as a specialized teacher, I have received training in a variety of established handwriting programs, i.e., Handwriting Without Teachers, Zaner-Bloser Handwriting, D'Nealian, Draw and Write Now as well as reading curriculums with associated writing programs. This course will be based on techniques and skills that I found useful in helping students learn the letters and their sounds based on the skills I learned when I received complete training from a certified Wilson trainer. I completed all of the levels of their curriculum Fundations®, Just Words®, Wilson Reading System®, and Fluency®/Basic. I have workedwith students PreK through grade 10 who are learning their reading skills, and developing new skills but have mild to severe learning disabilities and students who have gaps in their decoding skills that hinder their reading development. In addition, I work as a freelance writer and copy editor for 10 years as well as taught English skills at the elementary, middle, and high school levels for over 30 years. During my years as a teacher and now, as a freelance writer and editor, I have also tutored students who need to improve their writing skills for pre and post-graduate level papers.
