There are some scary parts of the story. Ghosts visits the main character. Poverty impacts adults and children in the story. A family in the story is mourning the death of a child. Some characters drink alcohol and smoke tobacco in this novel. 

There is some religious language used in the novel, such as the famous phrase "God bless us, everyone." The novel was published in 1843 and this was common place in society at the time. The main theme of the story is caring about people around you and doing good works. The story also has a nice message about how you can redeem yourself and how you can make positive changes in your life.
