In this 7-week course, students will learn about different types of nouns, sentences and paragraph writing. The teacher will use discussion, worksheets, games, songs, and slides during instruction. Students will be encouraged to share during discussions and have chances to interact with the teacher and their peers. Week 1 Day 1 Grammar-Identifying Nouns and Complete Sentences-Students will learn what a noun is and practice identifying them in writing. Writing-Students will practice identifying sentences and fragments. Students will work on writing good complete sentences. Day 2 Grammar- Students will practice identifying more nouns. Writing-The focus will be on identifying subjects and predicates in sentences. Week 2 Day 3 Grammar- Students will learn how to recognize common and proper nouns. Writing-Learners will do more subject/predicate practice activities. Day 4 Grammar-More common/proper noun practice. Writing- Types of Sentences- We will concentrate on statements and questions during this portion of the writing class. Week 3 Day 5 Grammar-Singular/Plural Nouns -Students will learn the rules of adding -s and -es to make plural nouns. Writing-Types of Sentences-The focus of this lesson will be on exclamations and commands. Day 6 Grammar-Singular/Plural Nouns-Students will learn the rules for making words ending in -y plural. Writing-Students will learn what a compound sentence is and how to construct them. Week 4 Day 7 Grammar-Singular/Plural Nouns-Students will learn the rules for changing -f and -fe to -ves, words that completely change form, and words that don't change at all. Writing-We will continue practicing compound sentence structure. Day 8 Grammar-Irregular Nouns-We will study a chart of words that change form when they are plural and do practice sheets. Writing-Paragraph Structure-The teacher will introduce how to write a paragraph using a hamburger graphic organizer to discuss the main parts of a paragraph. Students will learn about the topic sentence, details and closing sentence. Week 5 Day 9 Grammar- More Irregular Noun practice will occur in this session. Writing-We will specifically work on identifying topic sentences in paragraphs and begin writing our own topic sentences. Students will learn several different strategies for beginning the paragraph such as: using a question, an amazing fact, a quote, a personal opinion, humor, or repetition. Day 10 Grammar-Singular Possessive Nouns-Students will learn where to add apostrophes to show ownership in their writing. Writing-We will work on identifying and using relevant details (details that stick to the topic) in paragraphs. Students will also learn some transition words that can be used throughout their paragraphs. Week 6 Day 11 Grammar-Singular Possessive Nouns-We will practice more singular possessive nouns. Writing-We will continue learning about transition words and closing sentences. Day 12 Grammar-Plural Possessives-Students will recognize where to put apostrophes in plural words to show ownership. Writing-The students and teacher will write a paragraph together using all of the skills learned in previous classes. Students will be assigned a writing prompt and complete a graphic organizer to have their ideas ready for the next class. Week 7 Day 13-Grammar-Singular/Plural Possessives- Students will be doing mixed practice for singular and plural possessives. I will also be giving extra practice that covers all of the noun lessons during this unit. We will have a short quiz in the next session. Writing-Students will use the information on their graphic organizer to write an organized paragraph during class so they can ask questions and get feedback. Students will be given extra writing prompts to practice their paragraph writing skills on their own. Day 14-Students will take a quiz over all nouns. Students will share their finished paragraphs.
