NOTE: This class requires AT LEAST 2 learners in attendance. NO EXCEPTIONS. If only 1 learner, the Instructor will either 1) offer to transfer the student to a class with other learners, or 2) a refund will be issued. This course follows the "24 Steps to Middle C" beginning piano class. If you haven't taken the prerequisite course, you MAY still sign up for this course ONLY if you have played Middle C Position, can identify beginning notes and values, and the names of the white keys. This course is generally for beginning students, or students who need a review of the C 5-Finger Position. Although not required, prior experience with a group pre-K or elementary music class or music appreciation class is a plus. In this class we will learn the C five finger position, and how to read notes A through G on a grand staff, as well as learning strategies to remember notes on the staff. We will also introduce 5 - finger exercises and the C Major Chord will be introduced. Students will learn and gain a musical understanding of musical terms through interactive games, props, and writing and drawing music symbols. Our group class will meet once a week. With practice and review outside of class, students will begin to develop the discipline of learning their first instrument and be able to play some beginning songs in the C 5 finger Position and the C Major Chord will be introduced. For each topic covered the Instructor will demonstrate by example on her keyboard exercises for students to follow and practice, at times referring to a page in the lesson book or, demonstrating a musical idea not in the books to encourage critical thinking. The Instructor will also engage the class with interactive activities, some light movement and music educational games to help students retain music theory faster. Class will move at a comfortable pace, and Miss Canda wants to make sure each student understands the topic before moving forward. In our 10 week course (9 Lessons plus 1 Bonus Makeup class - total 10 CLASSES) we will cover the following: Welcome - Greetings and Piano Introduction A Review of the Following Topics: Dynamic Symbols: Loud vs. Soft Time signature, Measure, Bar Line and Repeat Sign Basic Music Notes and their Values Identifying the White Keys A to G and the "Music Alphabet" New Topics: Introduction to reading notes on the grand staff Learning a New Hand Position "C Position" Practicing Short Pieces in C Position Basic Technique Exercises Introducing the C Major Chord Music Listening and Theory Activities The Last Week of class we will have a final review and each student will play their favorite piece in C Position. Students will learn how to read notes on a staff, as well as practice techniques and mnemonic devices for note reading. We will also introduce the C Major Chord along with recognizing new symbols in theory.
With practice and review outside of class, students will begin to develop a discipline and be able to play in C Position with the attainable goal of playing the C Major Chord (holding down 3 keys in one hand if fingers are strong enough)

Hi there! I offer young minds effective ways to nurture their passion for music by guiding them with patience, creativity, and compassion.
Originally from MD, I received my Bachelor's degree in Music at George Washington University and my Master's Degree in Vocal Performance at Catholic University of America in Washington DC. Since 2002 I've performed and recorded professionally and have enjoyed teaching voice and piano to children and adults for over 20 years.
It's truly rewarding for me to motivate children to think outside the box as they learn concepts of music, theory, and ear training. I teach piano for ages 3 and up, from beginning to intermediate level (up to Level 3 proficiency) as well as offer basic keyboarding (playing with chords and playing by ear). I offer private voice for all levels and genres for ages 10 and up, and group vocal ensembles or musical theatre studies for students as young as 8 years old.
