Welcome to Unheard Voices - A Diverse History class! In this course, we will explore the fascinating and complex histories of various cultures and communities worldwide. We will explore the fascinating stories of people from around the world and from different periods. We will learn about the struggles, triumphs, and contributions of individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds. We will touch on the main parts of history (e.g., when did WWII start and end), but then we will dig deeper, looking at the people who don't get the recognition that they deserve (e.g., enslaved people, people of color, children, women, etc.).

Through interactive lessons and engaging discussions, we will explore different perspectives, challenge assumptions, and build empathy and understanding for people who may be different from us. World history is so vast and full of diverse people that I don't see these topics repeating, but to say that they never will be disingenuous. So come with an open mind and a willingness to learn, and let's embark on a journey of discovery and understanding together!

January and February: Chinese Mythology

Week of January 22: History of Chinese Mythology
In this class, we'll delve into the rich tapestry of ancient Chinese narratives transmitted through generations in an era predating the advent of written language. We'll explore the contrast with the Western world's greater familiarity with the myths of ancient Roman and Greek civilizations. Additionally, we'll examine the pivotal roles played by various dynasties in shaping and perpetuating these captivating myths. We will also talk about China's literary traditions. The myths of the classical era were part of an oral tradition, and shared knowledge was seldom written down. Few people in ancient China knew how to read or write, so passing on stories by telling them through the generations was the only way to keep them alive. We will discuss how these oral tales helped create the myths we know today.

Week of January 29: Origin of Myths
In this class, we will explore myths' fascinating origins and genesis. Our discussions will encompass diverse topics, including Yin and Yang, Pangu, the celestial bodies, Yi the Archer, the moon and stars, Nuwa, Mother Goddesses, and many other intriguing subjects.

Week of February 5: The First Gods
The earliest deities in Chinese mythology, such as Fuxi, Shennong, and Suirenshi, embody the primal forces of creation, playing pivotal roles in shaping the cosmos and laying the foundation for the rich tapestry of mythical narratives that followed. This class will discuss all the first gods and how they helped shape Chinese mythology.

Week of February 12: Demigods and Heros of the Classical Era
The class focuses on the Classical Era's prominent demigods, notably the Three Sage Kings—Yao, Shun, and Yu—considered pivotal figures in ancient Chinese mythology. Texts from the Zhou dynasty highlight their reign as a golden age, and Sima Qian, a Han-dynasty scholar, commences his historical account with Emperor Yao. These mythic narratives, abundant in sources and aligned with Confucian ideals, offer insights into moral conduct, aligning with the Confucian mandate of heaven.

Week of February 19: Other Gods and Demigods
In this class, we'll explore critical Chinese gods. Nezha, a protective deity with superhuman abilities, Erlang Shen, known for martial prowess and demon control, and Jiang Ziya, a strategic military general in "Fengshen Yanyi," defy demigod norms. Chiyou, a war deity with supernatural strength, and Lei Gong, the God of Thunder, add dynamic elements to Chinese mythology with their significant roles in various myths.

Week of February 26: Sacred Rivers and Mountains
In exploring Chinese mythology, we uncover the significance of sacred rivers and mountains, where mystical entities, including dragons, harmonize with nature. Hebo, the god of the Yellow River, is a vital guardian, influencing its life-giving essence. The Yellow River, known as the "Mother River of China," embodies life's cyclical nature. Mount Kunlun, a celestial peak, is a mythical bridge between the earthly and heavenly realms. Dragons, symbolizing power and transformation, act as guardians of cosmic order. This rich tapestry of mythology unveils a world where the natural and supernatural seamlessly intertwine, shaping ancient China's cultural and spiritual landscape.

Week of March 4: Buddhist Influences
We turn our attention to the profound impact of Buddhist influences on these ancient narratives. As we delve into the intersection of Buddhism and Chinese mythology, we unravel a tapestry where spiritual teachings, philosophical concepts, and mythological elements converge. From the integration of Bodhisattvas into the celestial pantheon to the subtle transformation of mythic motifs under Buddhist influence, our discussions illuminate the intricate and dynamic relationship between two rich cultural and spiritual traditions. This exploration provides a unique lens through which we can appreciate the synthesis of beliefs and the evolution of mythological narratives in ancient China.

Week of March 11: Legends of the Ming Dynasty
In exploring Chinese mythology, we delve into the fascinating era of the Ming Dynasty, uncovering the intertwining threads of history and myth. In the Ming Dynasty's influence on Chinese mythology, we encounter tales reflecting this vibrant period's societal and political dynamics. From legendary emperors to mythical heroes, the Ming Dynasty leaves an indelible mark on the mythological landscape, shaping narratives that resonate with the cultural and historical essence of the time. Our discussions illuminate how myth and reality entwine, providing a unique perspective on the rich tapestry of Chinese folklore during this pivotal dynasty.

Week of March 18: Daoism and Popular Beliefs
As we engage in discussions, we sense the subtle interplay between ancient Daoist philosophy and the vibrant tapestry of popular folklore. Daoism, with its emphasis on harmony, balance, and the interconnectedness of all things, weaves seamlessly into the fabric of Chinese mythological narratives. Simultaneously, popular beliefs, often rooted in local traditions and folk practices, contribute to a dynamic mythological landscape where deities, spirits, and mythical creatures play essential roles. Our conversations shed light on the synthesis of these diverse influences, showcasing the coexistence and mutual enrichment of Daoism and popular beliefs within the captivating realm of Chinese mythology.

Metas de aprendizaje

Through our studies, we will gain a deeper understanding of how historical events have shaped the world we live in today. Students will also get an understanding of how many different people from various backgrounds came together to make their world a better place. They will learn how even the underprivileged person can make a huge difference. When we see people for who they are, we can work towards building a more equitable and just society. This class is a space for respectful dialogue and critical thinking, and we will celebrate the diversity of our perspectives and experiences.

Orientación para padres
History can be scary or upsetting for kids because it often involves stories of war, violence, oppression, and injustice. Learning about these events can make children feel sad, angry, or frightened, especially if they cannot fully comprehend their reasons. Additionally, some historical events may hit close to home or affect their sense of identity, making them feel vulnerable or uncomfortable. However, it's important for children to learn about history so they can understand the world around them and make informed decisions about their future. By approaching history with empathy, critical thinking, and an open mind, children can navigate its difficult topics and use them as a catalyst for positive change.
