This course is intended to give students an opportunity to learn about the concept of function transformations and how they are used, interpreted, applied and graphed. It is intended to be an introduction to transformations, so no prior understanding of them is required. However, it will be helpful for a learner to have an understanding of functions and graphing prior to taking the course. Although we will have a set amount of content to cover each class, the class dynamics and procedures will be tailored to the unique make-up of each group. Larger groups will have more opportunity to work with partners and small group dynamics, while smaller groups will have more individual check-ins with me. The class will meet twice a week, and each meeting is 45 min to allow for ample time to explore, discuss, and practice the concepts presented. I encourage my students to be active learners by asking and answering questions, offering explanations, etc., as this enriches the experience and the learning for all students. There will be no required homework assigned in this class, but optional homework assignments/extra practice will be provided after each class meeting for students to complete when needed.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn how to use function composition to apply transformations to parent functions.
Students will learn how to interpret a function equation from the graph when transformations have been applied.

6 Lecciones
más de 3 semanasLección 1:
Function Composition and Introduction to Transformations
In this lesson we will go over the operation of function composition, define what function transformations are and how they relate to composition. We will do some simple practice of applying a single transformation to an equation.

Lección 2:
Applying Multiple Transformations
In this lesson, we will focus on how to correctly apply more than one transformation to an equation, paying attention to the order in which the transformations occur.

Lección 3:
Interpreting Transformed Functions
In this lesson, we will practice identifying what transformations are present in different types of functions, paying attention to different formats.

Lección 4:
Graphing Transformed Functions
In this lesson, we will take our understanding of function transformation from the previous lessons and learn how to graph the transformations to turn a parent function graph into a transformed function graph. We will also discuss things like domain and range and which transformations affect them.

Otros detalles
Requisitos previos
Students should have completed an Algebra 1 course and be familiar with the concept of functions and graphing.
Lista de útiles escolares
Paper Pen or Pencil Graphing Calculator (I will be using Desmos and the Numworks calculator, but any graphing calculator will work)
Recursos externos
Además del aula de Outschool, esta clase utiliza:
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Texas Certificado de Docencia en Matemáticas
Maestría en Matemáticas desde University of Houston
Ever since I started teaching high school math, I noticed how regularly function transformations appear in a variety of levels and topics, from Algebra 1 to Calculus. Therefore, I made it a goal to create a course that will offer students an opportunity to form a strong foundation in a topic that will serve them well throughout their high school math courses and beyond. My qualifications for teaching this topic are:
-B.A. in Mathematics from Rice University
-M.A in Mathematics from University of Houston
-Texas Teaching Certificate
-almost 15 years teaching and tutoring courses that teach and/or use function transformations.
