“Lyra and her daemon [a world whose meaning we will explore together in class] are rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armoured bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal - including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world. “Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra a savage, a schemer, a liar. She is as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want. “But what Lyra doesn’t know is that to help one of them, she’ll have to betray the other…” - Citation provided below! As we read The Golden Compass together, students will explore a fantasy world with a complex organization, set of rules, and more! Through our classes, students will explore animals within the world to learn about them, their habitats, and their personalities, and how they reflect in the character that they accompany within the novel. The outline below may shift as the course goes on depending on student needs, but we will go through the units as prescribed. As a teacher and a parent, I feel it is important to make adjustments based on student needs so that students are getting the most out of their classes and so that they are developing the skills that they need to be successful. Citation: Pullman, Philip. His Dark Materials, Book One: The Golden Compass. New York, Penguin Random House LLC, 1995.

When looking through the parental guides and summaries, please note that fantasy and science fiction novels have levels of violence in them that are common elements of the genre. We will work through these elements together but please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
