Experiencia de clase

In this Spanish immersion class for beginners ages 8-10, we will read stories in Spanish every week. The stories and class materials are written by Skillabration so that they are suited to beginners.

Spanish Immersion for Upper Elementary meets 3 times a week.

On day 1 we learn vocabulary.
On day 2 we read the story.
On day 3 we review.

***Please try to join this class on the first day. Also, this class is for beginners who have some knowledge of Spanish such as the alphabet, colors, food, clothes, months and days.***

Example Story Topics -
Week 1 - Making a Pizza - Haciendo una pizza
Week 2 - Cuento del desierto
Week 3 - Summer Break Activities - Actividades del verano
Week 4 - Summer Beachside Ice Cream - Helado en la playa en el verano
Week 5 - How to Make a Root Beer Float - Cómo hacer una cerveza de raíz con helado
Week 6 - How to Catch a Fish - Cómo pescar
Week 7 - How to Make Lemonade - Cómo hacer la limonada
Week 8 - How to Have a Picnic - Cómo hacer un picnic

***The prerequisite to this class is Beginner Spanish for Upper Elementary, unless your student has some experience with Spanish such as knowing the alphabet, food, clothing, colors, days, months, and numbers in Spanish. Feel free to message us if you want to discuss your students' Spanish skills. We can send you a sample lesson to see if you think your child will be able to comprehend.***

We engage students with practicing pronunciation, asking and answering questions, drawing pictures, body movements to memorize the vocabulary.

We can't wait to get started with this class to help students become Super Spanish Readers!

After class we always share the materials and students will get a class recording so they can practice later.

FAQ
How much Spanish is used in this class?
This class is bilingual. We'll use both English and Spanish. The point is to increase Spanish vocabulary, pronunciation, reading and listening fluency using comprehensible input. Comprehensible input is gradually immersing students using context clues such as images, cognates (words that look/sound the same in 2 different languages), and repetitive vocabulary.

What level of Spanish should my learner have?
We recommend at least 3 months of prior Spanish practice before joining this class. However, if your learner is a strong reader in English with both fluency and comprehension, they may be able to start without any background in Spanish. Likewise, if your student is bilingual in another language, it's possible they'll do just fine without any prior exposure to Spanish. It never hurts to give the class a try!

Send us a message if you have any other questions. :-)

Orientación para padres
We sometimes use Nearpod for our lessons. Nearpod is connected to our Google Slides. Students will receive a link in the Zoom chat box to join the Nearpod lesson. This requires some navigating between Nearpod and Zoom, which most students are able to do fairly easily. However, sometimes, parents need to assist in the beginning and teach the student how to do it a couple of times. You can use Nearpod on both a tablet and computer, but it is a bit easier on the computer. We've had students do both though. You do not need a Nearpod account. Students simply click the link and type their name to join the lesson. We also share our materials by sharing the screen with Google Slides. Student's do not need a Google account because we'll be screen sharing.

If students can use a device that has the annotate option on Zoom, that would be great (not required). Typically Chrome books and older computers do not have the annotate option on Zoom.

Spanish Teacher Val:
Valerie has experience teaching Spanish and English (ESL) to ages 3-18. She has over seven years of experience working with students from all over the world both as a school teacher and an online teacher.

She grew up speaking both English and Spanish in Texas. She has lived overseas in Madrid, Spain teaching ESL to students from kindergarten to adults. Through this experience, Valerie has adapted to the Spanish teaching culture and learned new ways to approach student learning.

Students love working with her because she is kind, engaging and a warm listener.
