In this class, students will learn a method for solving multi-step equations called the "Backtracking Method" or the "Socks and Shoes" method. You can see an example of this method in the class image. This method is very helpful for students because it makes it very clear which steps to do and in what order. This method allows students to easily solve multi-step equations presented in many forms (the form px + q = r; the form p(x + q) = r; the form (x+q)/p=r; and the form q-px=r). I have taught this method to many students who were not previously able to solve equations, and were finally able to solve equations using this method! The class will start with guided notes that review the Order of Operations, and the concept of Inverse Operations. Then students will fill out notes that introduce the Socks and Shoes Method. Students will practice this new method with the class and independently. The practice will include solving problems in all the forms listed above, as well as solving word problems. We will start with whole numbers and incorporate some fractions and decimals towards the end of class. The independent practice will be differentiated to meet each individual students needs. At the very end of class, the students will complete an Exit Ticket to show what they learned during the session. Pre-Requisite: It is helpful if students have finished at least 6th Grade Math. Students should have some knowledge of Order of Operations and an understanding of what it means to solve an equation.
Metas de aprendizaje

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Hi! My name is Andi and I am so excited to be teaching math classes on Outschool! I have taught high school and middle school math at both public and international schools for the past five years. I have a Maine teaching certification for grades 5-12 math.
I love to teach math classes that are fun and hands-on and I enjoy helping students build a conceptual understanding of math. My course offerings include activities like using Algebra Tiles, practicing math through cooking and baking, playing math games, and teaching different and interesting techniques for solving problems. I love working with all students at all levels in math.
In my free time I enjoy travelling, running, surfing, cooking, reading and hanging out with my cat, Willard!
If you have any questions about my classes or have a course request, feel free to send me a message. I look forward to meeting your learner soon!
