In this 4 day class, your child will be introduced to the wonder of chemistry. They will be learning about atomic structure and why we have chemical reactions,

On day 1, we will learn about atomic structure: the nucleus, protons, neutrons, and electrons. The kids will be engaged through a slideshow, class discussion, and a hands-on project. We will build atomic models of different elements using your choice of either clay or edible items such as gummy bears, gumdrops, small colored marshmallows, dried beans etc. Buttons, sequins, and other non- edible small items may be used as well.

Day 2 We will focus on learning about electron shells or energy levels and electron orbitals. The kids will be engaged through class discussion. I will show the kids how to use Bohr models to place small different colored objects of their choice to model electron placement of different elements.

Day 3 The kids will be introduced to the very basics of chemical bonds. We will learn about ions and ionic bonds as well as covalent bonds. We will use the double Bohr model handout and small manipulatives (small buttons, sequins , M &Ms, gummy bears, cereal like Fruit Loops) to place on the handouts to show how ions and ionic bonds are formed and how covalent bonds are formed.

Day 4 The kids will learn how atoms form different bonds to create molecules. We will use different elements to create models of the different molecules that the elements can make when they bond with each other. The kids may use edible materials such as gummy bears, small, different colored marshmallows, gumdrops to make their models or different colors of clay or play doh; toothpicks will be needed. You can view the supply list for other items to use to make the models. We will share our models with each other as we make them.

****All learners must be enrolled in the class in order to be fair to the other enrolled learners.****
*******Handouts of the Bohr model, the double Bohr model, and the periodic table need to be printed for class. Other supplies are listed in the learner supply list.********
Metas de aprendizaje

Day 1

Choice of:
Clay, play-doh, gummy bears, gumdrops, or colored marshmallows (any other small objects like buttons, sequins, dried beans)
1 copy of the periodic table needs to be printed for class. It will be used for all classes.

Day 2
1 handout of the Bohr model will need to be printed for class.
periodic table from day 1
M&Ms, Skittles, jellybeans, gummy bears, gumdrops, different colored small pom poms, different colored buttons, different colored small sequins, or different colored pony beads. You can choose one or two of these items to use for class.

Day 3
1 copy of the double Bohr model handout from Day 2

copy of the periodic table from Day 1

M&Ms, Skittles, jellybeans, gummy bears, gumdrops, different colored very small pom poms, different colored small buttons, different colored small sequins, or different colored pony beads. You can choose one or two of these items to use for class.

Day 4
You will need several of each item because we will be making several molecule models.
items such as colored marshmallows gummy bears, gumdrops, (just one of these items; don't have to use all three)
If you don't want to use edible items, different colored clay can be used as well.
toothpicks
