****Please read each book's description so that you can decide if you want your child to read the book. ****

Meeting with with friends to discuss books is so much fun! Books open a child's world to new ideas, vocabulary, cultures, and activities and they allow kids to experience all sorts of adventures. Each book club meeting our book discussion will begin with a focus activity such as a quote from the book, a scene from the book, or a description of the setting or a character.

In order for our book club to have a group discussion, the kids need to read the assigned chapters before each meeting. If a learner doesn't finish the readings before our meeting, that's okay except the chapters will be discussed, so there will be spoilers. Your child may join at any time because we will be reading a new Ivy + Bean book every two weeks. If a child joins after the first meeting of a new book, that's okay because we will review the week's previous chapters at the start of class.

Our group discussion will include discussing literary elements (plot, characters, setting, etc.) and the kids' opinions about the book. Discussing the book will help the learners with their reading comprehension by helping them to think critically about the literary elements in the book. I will also use discussion questions that will help the kids to use reading comprehension skills such as main idea, etc. Also, our book discussion will allow the kids to hear different perspectives about the characters, plot, etc in each book which can help them to understand the characters' emotions and motivations better, as well as using evidence from the book to support their opinions.

The kids will also make and use a Reading Response Journal where they cut and glue a discussion question onto a page in a spiral bound notebook and answer the question. We will use these journals in our club meetings, so your child needs to have their journal with them during our book club meeting. PDFs of the Reading Response Journal cover and the discussion questions will be posted in the classroom. We also do book-related activities each meeting such as making crafts or a science theme activity.
The supplies will be posted in the classroom a week before the club meeting .
Please read reviews and summaries about each book so that you can decide if your child may read the book.
https://www.commonsensemedia.org/ is a good website to use or an internet search with the book title and the words book review after it will show different reviews of each book.
Kirkus Reviews is another website where you can read reviews of each book.

****All learners must be enrolled in the club to be fair to the other enrolled learners.***

Orientación para padres
Ivy & Bean are portrayed as two young girls with very active imaginations and who get into trouble with their adventures. Sibling arguments with name calling occur between Bean and her sister Nancy. I think these are fun books for kids to read, and they provide opportunity to discuss Ivy's & Bean's choices. Please read reviews or the books so that you can decide if your child may read these books. We will be doing activities in class that may include using scissors, glue, and other arts & craft supplies at times. We will also be using purple cabbage juice that you make at home, baking soda, lemon juice or citric acid, washing soda, and white distilled vinegar.
Lista de útiles escolares
Your child will need copies of each Ivy & Bean book. A pdf of other supplies will be posted in the classroom.
