Not only is reading an essential life skill, but it can be a source of entertainment. In this course, students in 5th and 6th grade dive into classic novels for this age group. Meant for struggling readers, or those who need some additional support (dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, learning disabilities, language disorders), the instructor, a certified Reading Specialist, will guide students with: *Reading comprehension *Plot structure *Characterization (direct and indirect) *Vocabulary *Quote analysis *Themes For each book, students will be given reading comprehension questions and vocabulary to complete while reading. The instructor will post video introductions for each new book, providing students with necessary background information. During each class session, the instructor will review the reading comprehension questions and vocabulary, answer student questions, review main plot points, and discuss important quotes/themes/concepts from the reading. Students will also play Blooket based on the assigned chapters. Below is the book schedule we will be following. Students should come to class with the chapters read, reading comprehension questions answered, vocabulary chart completed, and a list of questions (if they have any). If a student attends class without completing the reading or assignments, they may have difficulties following along with the class. Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl Summary: A clever story about a sneaky fox, who steals from farmers to feed his family. Week 1- Chapter 1-10- focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes. Week 2- Chapter 11-18 -focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes. Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit Summary: A coming of age story where a young girl, Winnie, meets a family with a dangerous secret. Week 3- Prologue- Chapter 9 -focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes. Week 4- Chapter 10-18 -focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes. Week 5- Chapter 19-27 -focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes. Among the Hidden by Margaret Haddix Summary: A futuristic story about a boy, Luke, who is not supposed to exist, and the risks he takes. Week 6- Chapter 1-7 -focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes. Week 7- Chapter 8-15 -focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes. Week 8- Chapter 16-22 -focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes. Week 9- Chapter 23-30 -focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by JK Rowling Summary: A classic story about a boy in a magical world trying to make friends, defeat evil, and live to see another year. Week 10- Chapter 1-3 -focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes. Week 11- Chapter 4-6 -focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes. Week 12- Chapter 7-9 -focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes. Week 13- Chapter 10-12 -focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes. Week 14- Chapter 13-15 -focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes. Week 15- Chapter 16-17 -focus on reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, characterization, plot elements, conflict, quote analysis, and themes.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will improve their reading comprehension skills by answering questions and participating in discussions.
Students will gain knowledge of new vocabulary words by completing a graphic organizer and participating in discussions.
Students will learn/review plot elements (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution) by participating in discussions.
Students will analyze text evidence for characterization, and theme by participating in a discussion.
