Atoms are the basic building blocks of all matter. The computer you are reading this on, the building you are in, the beverage you are drinking, you, me, the air we breathe are all made of atoms and molecules. Chemistry is the study of atoms and molecules and how they interact and react. Physics if the study of how things happen around us including energy, work, and motion. Students will learn about atoms and molecules, solutions, & chemical reactions. We will study energy and motion, light and sound. We will conduct experiments to enhance the topics we are learning about. We will spend the first part of each class learning about the chemistry or physics topic of the day. We will complete an experiment or project in the second part of the class. Our schedule will be: Monday: Atoms & Molecules/ We will conduct a solubility experiment Tuesday: Solutions & States of Matter / We will conduct a solutions experiment Wednesday: Chemical Reactions a & Acids and Bases/ We will do a chemical reaction experiment Thursday: Energy, Work & Motion/ We will do a transfer of energy experiment Friday: Magnets and Lights & Sound/ We will conduct a sound experiment Safety Note: All experiments should be conducted in a well-ventilated area. Safety goggles or glasses are recommended. A table covering is recommended in case there are spills. Students MUST be able to follow ALL instructions for their own safety. If your student will have problems listening and following directions, please have an adult nearby to assist. Please have all of the supplies prepared and ready before each class. All experiments are safe - we use common household products - but is imperative all students LISTEN carefully while we are working on our experiments to maintain a safe classroom. Supplies needed for each class: Monday: Skittles, a small plate (saucer-sized), 1 cup of warm water Tuesday: Five clear plastic cups filled half-full with water, 2 spoons, paper towels, 2 tablespoons EACH of sugar, salt, oatmeal (or a similar grain such as barley or rice), and cooking oil, plus a bottle of dish detergent Wednesday: 1 bowl & 1 non-metal cup or smaller bowl that will fit in the bigger bowl & 1 cup of vinegar & 1/4 cup of baking soda Thursday: 1 piece of paper, 2 disposable plastic or paper straws, tape, 6 glass marbles Friday: 1 Disposable plastic cup, 1 piece of plastic wrap to fit the top of the cup, rubber band that will fit around the top of the cup, 10-12 pieces of rice

Annette the Teacher has been teaching for a very long time. She has over three decades of experience teaching children of all ages. She has a B.A. in Sociology with minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. She has homeschooled her own children from Pre-School through (their current) High School. All of her classes are interactive. Annette encourages students to fully participate in class. All of her classes feature hands-on activities and books Annette writes for the class herself.
Annette is a published writer, publisher, and artist. She uses her extensive knowledge and experience to create unique classes for every student. She enjoys teaching science, history, art, and cooking classes. She brings history alive with her "Life in ..." history classes where students learn about key times in history by experiencing children and families' lives in that time period. "Paint like ..." art classes where students will learn about famous artists and create their own artwork based on the artists' works. "Smart Science" classes where we explore science and complete experiments and projects. Kid Cuisine classes are cooking classes for Young Chefs based on historic foods and science topics. Students should be prepared to make, explore, and create during class. Annette knows hands-on, interactive experiences are the best way for children to learn.
Annette also has experience working with Special Needs children. She is Mom to a child on the autism spectrum and a child with serious medical needs. She also has worked with children with ADHD. If your child has special needs, please contact Annette so she can work with you and your child.
