Experiencia de clase

Nivel de inglés: desconocido
Grado de EE. UU. 2 - 5
This flex course allows students to explore 8 different types of age appropriate poetry and then compose their own poem based on the model we have studied. Children need to understand that poetry is not something to memorize, but rather it is an enjoyable way to share their experiences and feelings with others. It is important for children to analyze how specific words used in poems create images in their minds.

Poetry is important for children because it is the first genre many children hear through lullabies, nursery rhymes, and songs. This course will take students to the next level by using structured, formulaic poems (such as shape or concrete poems) help students build confidence with writing poetry and provide opportunities for creativity, word play, and attention to word choice.

Class 1: What is a poem? Acrostic poems
Class 2: Cinquan Poems
Class 3: Sensory Poem
Class 4: Limerick Poem
Class 5: Shape/Concrete Poem
Class 6: Diamente Poem
Class 7: Haiku Poem
Class 8: Clerihew Poem

Each class provides instructional material with information and examples for each poetry type. Students explore what they hear and feel with each poetry form. After the lesson, students will compose their own poem based on the type that was studied. Learners are encouraged to post files, videos, and/or pictures of their poetry the composed and illustrated in order to receive constructive feedback from peers and myself. Additionally, learners are encouraged to provide positive feedback and suggestions on at least one other learner's post each week to foster collaboration. The more students share the more we will all learn from each other.

Learners do not need any prior knowledge about poetry because this is an introductory level course. I will address all types of learning styles by using auditory, visual, and kinesthetic techniques. Every learner in my classroom is important to me, and I want each learner to feel comfortable. I want to address the needs of each student. Therefore, if you feel your student has special needs I should take into consideration please feel free to share those with me. I want to honor each students' experience with their creativity.

I look forward to creating and learning with your student.

I have a B.A. in English. I also have a Master's of Education. I was a classroom English teacher for 24 years teaching primarily writing, world literature, American literature, and British literature. I have also had classroom experience teaching math, geography, earth science, and reading. My studies in English required I take a variety of literature classes from different cultures and historical time periods ranging from Caribbean literature, African literature, World literature, American literature, and English literature. Each of these courses involved a survey of poetry, short stories, mythology, nonfiction, and novels from each of these cultures and time periods. I have also taken part in multiple professional development trainings addressing cultural issues and how to address these issues as a teacher.

Students will be expected to recognize the diversity of opinions and backgrounds of their classmates. The emphasis will be on the literary devices in the poems. A particular religion or a belief system is neither favored nor advanced. The poetry we will explore is age appropriate for this class. As a certified teacher, I am comfortable discussing topics with courage, compassion and clarity. Parents are welcome to listen in to class or to watch the recording, which I automatically post. I encourage students to talk to their parents about the poetry and the issues we discuss.
