Experiencia de clase

Nivel Beginner
This class teaches how to throw clay on a miniature pottery wheel to create miniature pots. Students will learn how to use both their fingers and tools to center clay on a wheel to create a pot.

I will do a demo of how to throw a tiny pot and then I will walk the students through step by step to repeat the process just as I did in the demo. After I have walked them through step by step, they can continue to create their pot and I can give them help and feedback as they work.

I want students to not be overwhelmed with the steps or the process, and that is why I will take them through one step at a time. Then they will also have the chance to see what the different tools can do by experimenting with them. They will come to find their own process in doing so. I will have the camera on my wheel so I can always show different techniques or give helpful feedback when needed.

Necesidades de aprendizaje
This class has not been specifically designed to support unique learning needs, but as a person with ADHD, I have found that because of the nature of the activity, it keeps attention and is actually calming and meditative at times.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students will need a miniature pottery wheel. They can be bought on Amazon for $21-$36. I suggest a certain one not necessarily from a particular vendor, but one that is a box shape and comes with tools. Here is an example of what it looks like, though they can vary in color and price. https://a.co/d/aDDTqYl Here is another example of a similar wheel. https://a.co/d/1GOOY5Q

The wheel will come with everything your student needs except a small bowl, a rag, and the clay. A lot of students find a clay store or local pottery shop that will sell them clay and will fire pieces for them in the kiln at their studio.

If you do not live near a local studio, or are not interested in that, you can get a particular Laguna Clay that is air dry. It is called Mexo White Air Dry Clay. Here is one location where it is sold but you can find it in many clay stores or online. https://clayartcenter.net/product/laguna-wc641-mexo-white-air-dry-clay/ Here is the same clay on a different site. https://stoneleafpottery.com/mexo-white-air-dry/

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have been teaching art to K-8th grade for over 13 years. In that time, I taught handbuilding with clay to all ages of students. For the last two years, I have been more focused on teaching on the miniature pottery wheel so students have the opportunity to learn how to center clay on a wheel and create tiny pots. I have taught both kids and adults at my private studio through AirBnb Experiences since May of 2022, but also teach the mini wheel in different local studios in San Diego.
