Get ready to improve your reading comprehension while you learn about Greek mythology. Each class opens with either Ms. Buck or a student volunteer reading a story from "D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths" (Lexile 1070). The book covers all the classic myths in child-friendly language with exciting illustrations. In this class, we will cover the origin story of Greek myth and the thirteen main gods and goddesses. After each story, Ms. Buck will hold an open-floor discussion of story themes, cultural significance, and even creative thinking prompts. This class requires no background in Greek myth, but students with outside knowledge are always welcome. The primary focus of this class is enhancing reading comprehension skills; an obsession with Greek myth is just a wonderful side effect. TOPICS BY WEEK: Week 1: Introductions and Greek Origin Story & Zeus, King of the Gods Week 2: Hera and Hephaestus & Aphrodite and Aries Week 3: Athena and Poseidon & The Siblings - Artemis and Apollo Week 4: Hermes and Dionysus & Hades, Persephone, and Demeter Week 5: Makeup session & Closing Discussion (with Optional Costume Party!)
Metas de aprendizaje
In addition to learning about Greek myths, students will enhance their higher-order thinking skills and listening skills.

Orientación para padres
Greek mythology represents the stories of the Ancient Greek polytheistic religion. My approach to these stories is purely one of fiction and cultural appreciation, but the topic of religion may come up very briefly as we cover the Greek pantheon. I will not be sharing my own religious background, nor should students. At most, I plan to briefly mention current polytheistic and monotheistic religions by name only. That said, if discussions about a pagan belief system might upset you or your child, this may not be the right class in which to enroll.
Lista de útiles escolares
While not required, you can certainly get your own copy of the book through Amazon for about $15 (If you would like to support my classroom, you can use my affiliate link at no additional cost to you: https://amzn.to/2zvjEzK) or through your preferred book vendor. The stories will be shown in the Zoom classroom, so purchasing your own copy is purely for enjoyment outside of class. Again, you are NOT required to purchase the book.
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.

Hey there! I'm a K-6 teacher in California. I have a strong background in literacy, reading comprehension, and arithmetic instruction. I also worked with the education outreach branch of NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab on the latest in STEM instruction. My approach to teaching is patient and adaptable, and I'm always exploring new ways to make online learning interactive. My lessons may potentially feature my two cats, Miss Scarlett and Tybalt, Prince of Cats, and upon request, my snake, Morpheus.
