***Word problems are based on 4th grade standards****
Can you solve a math problem if there are just numbers, but have difficulty once it becomes a word problem? Then this class is for you! Each week, students will work together to solve word problems of varying difficulty. Our focus will be on determining how to solve using the CUBES problem-solving strategy.
C-circle all numbers
U- underline question
B- box key words
E- Evaluate steps
S- Solve
On each word problem, students will have an opportunity to discuss how to solve it and I will facilitate the discussion. I will also teach students how to solve the problem if they have not learned how to solve a particular problem. Students who are comfortable doing the math operations will be able to send answers in chat while I help other students step-by-step. This class is ideal for 3rd-5th graders.
Students should know how to fluently add and subtract, as well as complete basic multiplication and division problems in order to be successful in this class.

There are no weekly topics as each week is the same format and I choose word problems based on student needs.

Here are some examples of problems that your learner might see in this class. You can use these problems to help determine if the class is a good fit.

Example #1:
Mrs. Ellis is a principal at Ellis Elementary. She decided she wants to hang a new bulletin board. She purchases a board that is 6 feet long and 7 feet wide. How many inches of wall space does she need to hang her board?

Example #2:
A restaurant serves breakfast 7 days per week. Each weekday about 40 people eat there. On weekends about 85 people eat there each day. If the average bill is $10 per person, how much does the restaurant make in a week?

Example #3:
The temperature when Lilly woke up was 58 degrees. By noon, the temperature had increased 12 degrees, but when a cold front came through the temperature dropped 22 degrees. What temperature was it after the cold front came through?

Example #4:
A local library did a survey of 100 people. Of the people who responded, 24 preferred e-books, 15 did not have a preference and the rest liked traditional books better. How many more of the survey respondents liked traditional books more than e-books?

Example #5:
Melissa's mom lets her play games on her iPad based on the number of chores she completes. For each chore, Melissa earns 7 minutes of iPad time. This month, Melissa has earned 175 minutes of iPad time. How many chores did Melissa earn this month?

Hello! I live in Abilene, TX with my husband and 4 children. When I am not busy teaching, I enjoy reading books, completing logic puzzles, doing family genealogy, and cooking new recipes.
I have a B.S. in psychology and a M.Ed. in teacher leadership. I have taught math in grades 4-6 for the past 10 years. I have over 17 years of experience working with children.
My focus on Outschool is math word problems. As a teacher, I encounter so many students who have a negative mindset about school. I want to provide students with positive experiences in education through practice, reinforcement, and encouragement. I hope to see you in one of my classes soon!
