In this class, students will learn about chemistry in a fun, age appropriate setting. They will learn what scientists do and how to keep a scientific inquiry journal with the great discoveries they will make in the class. Furthermore, they will explore, through hands-on activities and exciting demonstrations, how these concepts work in real life. They will learn about the states of matter, the differences between a physical and a chemical change, the parts of an atom and a molecule, the difference between an acid and a base, and the effect of temperature on chemistry. For each concept, students will watch a demonstration, investigate through an experiment, or create a model that shows the concept they're studying. Best of all, they will be having so much fun, they won't even realize how much they're learning! For a class-by-class breakdown of what students will learn each day, please see my syllabus.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will understand the basics of chemistry, and will be able to answer the following questions:
What are the states of matter?
What is a physical change? What is a chemical change?
What are atoms? What are molecules? How do they work together to make everything we can see and touch?
What is an acid? What is a base? What are some acids and bases you use every day?
How does heating something up or cooling something down change how the molecules act?

más de 2 semanasLección 1:
The Scientific Method
In this lesson, students will get to know each other. They will also learn about the scientific method, the process scientists use to study the world. Finally, they will set up their scientific notebooks: books where they will keep track of what they learn, what they do, and what they wonder throughout the class.

Lección 2:
States of Matter
In this lesson, students will learn about the states of matter. They will then make a special slime that appears to be in two states of matter at once!

Lección 3:
Physical and Chemical Changes
In this lesson, students will gain a basic understanding of the differences between physical and chemical changes, and they will get to see these changes take place as they make an early form of plastic with items most people have at home!

Lección 4:
Building Blocks of the Universe
In this lesson, students will develop a basic understanding of the structure of atoms, and they will build a model of an atom to help them remember how atoms work. Then, they will learn that atoms make up molecules, and they will make an edible water molecule they can have later as a snack.

Orientación para padres
For one experiment, we will need to heat milk, but it doesn't need to be hot. It needs to be warm, and students can heat it in the microwave.
Requisitos previos
Basic proficiency with measuring dry and wet ingredients is recommended, but we will review it, so it's okay if students are not extremely good at it.
