Experiencia de clase

Shalom! Welcome to Hebrew Reading. This course spends 16-weeks developing the basic building blocks necessary to read Hebrew, specifically phonics and decoding skills. Students will learn the names and sounds of all the Hebrew letters and vowels, special phonics rules and how to sound-out Hebrew syllables, words, and sentences. Students will also be introduced to a handful of vocabulary words as they work through our textbook.

Please keep in mind that at the end of this course your child will not be “reading” Hebrew they will be decoding it. Decoding which is defined as translating print into speech is a prerequisite to reading. When we learn to decode in our native language reading is an automatic extension, because students already have a huge built-in vocabulary. Vocabulary is needed for comprehension and comprehension is needed for reading. For native English speakers that decode the word “cat” they automatically understand that the word is the written representation of the animal. Most students who will be taking this course have little to no Hebrew vocabulary and as such their initial decoding will not automatically be considered reading. HOWEVER, to gain the ability to read Hebrew decoding is as necessary a step as learning the letter sounds. Some students consider the ability to decode Hebrew to be enough for their purposes but for those who wish to truly learn to READ Hebrew they will need to continue to bolster their vocabulary and comprehension. Students can continue to practice their decoding skills while adding reading comprehension and other additional skills in my Modern Hebrew Language 1A class.

Please note:

*This is a foreign language class. While participation is not required it is a necessary element for student success. Please keep that in mind when enrolling.

*All class times are approximate. Class length varies based on student progress and the number of learners. Classes are designed to not run over the allotted time.

*All classes will begin on time as long as there is at least one learner in the classroom. If 10 minutes after the start time there are no students in the class the teacher will exit the classroom. This class cannot be taught with no students, so no recordings will be available for classes with zero attendance.
