Math can be difficult and frustrating for many students. Often times, skills build upon each other creating learning gaps and making more advanced concepts feel impossible. Other students may find math to be easy breezy! Maybe they are gaining momentum in their current math courses and are looking for a challenge. Look no more! This class is perfect for high achieving 3rd graders, 5th graders who need extra support, 4th graders learning the material and anyone in between! In this math class we will introduce, analyze, and practice individual math problems using a spiral method. This means the lessons do not build upon each other! You can join this class at anytime through the year or miss a class without missing a beat! This method is a great way to build confidence, review or preview multiple fourth grade standards, and flex your math muscles! Each class will begin with a short "icebreaker" question, include a mini math game and an opportunity for students to ask questions at any point! We will be practicing 22 questions types with different problems in each class. Depending on the students skill levels and prior background knowledge, we should review 2-4 questions each class that are more in-depth. My goal is for every student to feel they understand the concepts modeled and practiced. Please message me if you have questions about a specific week! Example schedule & question types include: Week 1 Read, Write and Compare Multi-Digit Whole Numbers Using Place Value and Base Ten Operations Place Value and Rounding Week 2 Prime and Composite Numbers Greatest Common Factors Least Common Multiples Week 3 Generate and Analyze Patterns Interpret a Multiplication Equation as a Comparison Story Problems Using Whole Numbers, Fractions and Mixed Numbers; Operations, Equivalence, Ordering, Comparing; Addition, Week 4 Subtraction of Fractions and Whole Numbers; Multiplication of Fractions and Whole Numbers Fluently Add and Subtract Number Using Standard Algorithm Week 5 Multiply and Divide by One-Digit And Two-Digit Whole Numbers Equations with Unknown Quantities Fluently Add, Subtract, Multiply, and Divide Using a Standard Algorithm Number Operations, Fractions and Equivalence Week 6 Decompose Fractions Multiply Fractions by a Whole Number Use Decimal Notation for Fractions Comparing Decimals, Comparing Fractions, Ordering Fractions and Decimals Week 7 Relative Sizes of Measurements Units within One System Apply Area and Perimeter Formulas for Real World Problems Make a Line Plot to Display Data Week 8 Recognize Angles as Geometric Shapes, Measure Angles, Recognize Angles as an Additive Draw Points, Lines, Line Segments, Rays, Angles, Perpendicular and Parallel Lines; Identify These 2-Dimensional Figures, Classify Dimensional Figures Based on Presence or Absence of Parallel or Perpendicular Lines; Identify and Recognize Right Triangles Use Four Operations to Solve Word Problems Involving Distances, Time, Volumes, Masses, Money, Fractions, Decimals; Apply Week 9 Area and Perimeter Formulas in Real World Problems; Recognize Angle Measure as an Additive Fluently Add, Subtract, Multiply, and Divide; Use Arrays And Area Models; Find Whole Number Quotients and Remainders; User Place Value to Solve Story Problems Use Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division to Solve Story Problems (This schedule will then repeat using different problems within the same question types. Students will gain confidence as our class progresses! Schedule may change based on students prior knowledge and how many students we have.)
