This is an intro class to the soon-to-be multi-week course on using real-world science curriculum (mostly middle school level at NGSS and Massachusetts, USA state standards - this is where I am from and have taught) to dive into sci-fi/fantasy world building. In this class I will start off with a few general science topics on a global scale (plate tectonics, climate, oceanography, world biomes, etc...) and then we will start to think of what a new world of our making could like. This is great for Dungeons and Dragon, aspiring authors of books and comics, fans of the genre, and anyone who likes being creative.

There are 2 main parts of the lesson, the teaching portion from me, and then the time that student get to work on their own worlds they would like to create. To instruct, I start with a semi-lecture style slideshow with some clips, fun facts, sharing with the class (optional) and the science standard(s). For the world-building aspect, I will be using the free version of a website called "Inkarnate" - a fantasy map making site. An account is required for use but this site is not required for this class, although encouraged as I will be demonstrating on this site.

I will have a very quick overview of some other resources that can be used online or if a student wishes they can draw on paper. The medium in which we illustrate with does not detract from the science content and learning, so student can use whatever they would like!

I always encourage my learners to "ask the question". I want to hear their wacky and awesome ideas and gain some confidence in speaking up, speaking to a group, and having the confidence to share an original idea. I try and make the atmosphere of the lesson as welcoming (and nerdy) as possible.

Metas de aprendizaje

Student will be able to (SWBAT) - Explain why the continents on earth are in there current locations (Theory of Plate Tectonics)
- to be expanded on in future semester and summer classes
Explain why the earth has different seasons/climates.
- to be expanded on in future semester and summer classes

Necesidades de aprendizaje
While this class is not specifically geared towards learners with unique needs ALL are welcome. I have a lot of experience working in public school classrooms and one-on-one with students both in mainstream and in SPED programs.
Orientación para padres
I will be using the free version of a website called "Inkarnate" (https://inkarnate.com). It is a third party site that has a free version with a few tools we can use for the lesson. There are some alternate sites I have found that work right in the browser without an account but are not quite as good. However, this course is 100% doable with a Google Slide Show and copy and paste as well as the draw features or simply using a writing utensil and paper. We are making a map with land masses, names, geological features, and maybe a few decorations. So if they would like to use some cool new software, great! But, whatever your child feels the most comfortable with thats the best one.
Requisitos previos
No pre-reqs for the science content, but would recommend learners to be at about a 5th grade level for some basic concepts. Must have some basic knowledge on using an internet browser.
Lista de útiles escolares
If your child is not going to use any of the websites recommended then any art supplies that would be used to sketch a map would be required to show completion.

Fuentes
None of these are required - Paper and pencil work just as well. https://inkarnate.com/ Google Slides - slides.new https://map-gen.netlify.app/ (very simple to use but limited in customization - black and white) https://www.redblobgames.com/maps/mapgen4/ (easiest to use and is in color)

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have a bachelor's degree in Marine Biology and a masters degree +30 in Education. I have been working in education for 15 years as a general ed tutor, camp counselor, Special Ed and mainstream tutor/paraprofessional, coach, and full-time Science Teacher for grades 5-8 and also hold a certification for Biology 8-12. I am a teacher and "Science-Guy" through and through. Some life experiences, I was on the Robotics Team in high school, I am SCUBA certified, I was able to study abroad in Australia for a semester while in college, I worked in an Elasmobranch (shark, sting rays, and skates) Morphology lab while in college, after college I volunteered in Marine Mammal Husbandry with California Sea Lions.

In my time working in education I have held many different professions within the field. I started out as a Boys and Girls Track and Field Coach at a D1 high school and day-to-day substitute teacher for the town, then became a tutor/paraprofessional (my schedule in classrooms were all science and math classes). I did four months as a longterm substitute in an 8th grade classroom then I went on to be a full-time tutor through a special program called "Home Instruction". I would tutor students in all their subjects in their home when they were struggling with things like anxiety, depression, required special accommodations for learning, or maybe just really sick or injured and cannot come into school. I would spend summers working camps and tutoring (as well as various other side jobs).

For the past 7 years I have been a fully certified middle school science teacher teaching mostly 6th and 7th grade (although my town would move around the middle school standards a lot and touch on 5th and 8th as well in my classes - lots of vertical planing and coordination for our curriculum).
