This 4-session course introduces learners to cells and cell biology, focusing on 4 types of cells in the human body: immune cells, neurons, red blood cells and stem cells. We'll learn about common elements of all living cells, and then explore the specific functions and structures of immune cells, neurons, red blood cells and stem cells. The course incorporates exciting scientific visualizations showing cells-in-action, and features a hands-on cell drawing activity in each class session. This course aims to nurture young learners' curiosity about the wonders of living organisms and the field of cell biology! There are about 30 trillion living cells in the human body, differentiated into about 200 different types of cells. Cells inside our bodies are specialized, with each type of cell performing unique functions. Each type of cell has a different structure, size, shape, and function, and contains different organelles. We will explore four fascinating types of cells in this course - immune cells, neurons, red blood cells and stem cells. The course sessions are organized as follows: Session 1: - Introduction to basic cell parts - all cells have a cell membrane, organelles, cytoplasm and DNA - The function and structure of a variety of immune cells - Visual and animated examples of various types of immune cells - Drawing activity: drawing an immune cell Session 2 - The role of neurons and their special characteristics (unique structure and function) - Visual and animated examples of how neurons connect and function - Drawing activity: drawing neurons Session 3 - Red blood cells and their special characteristics (unique structure and function) - Visual and animated examples of how red bloods cells travel through the body - Explanation of how blood clotting works - Drawing activity: drawing red blood cells Session 4 - Stem cells and their special characteristics (unique structure and function) - Visual and animated examples of stem cells specialize into different specific cells, and cell division - Drawing activity: drawing stem cells
