In this class, Your child will learn how to find the probability of one event and multiple events. They will learn the difference between And and OR probabilities. They will also learn how probabilities apply to board game design and surveys. They will learn about odds and how to find the odds for and against an event. We will learn these concepts through hands-on experimentation with theoretical and empirical concepts of probability and odds. I like to show the students the way math rules work so that it is easier to remember them. This way the curiosity of knowing how something works will move the gears of critical thinking. After I have shown them a pattern and why it works. I will ask them to apply it to a hard problem. If they can use these skills in different ways, I know they have mastered the concepts. I believe to memorize math is not understanding, but to apply math is not only understanding but fluency! To obtain this level of understanding, I will lead the students on a journey to discovering math through discussion, observation, and application of the math being used. If this is the kind of math class, you want then I am the teacher for you. I am a homeschooler, and I enjoy the freedom of figuring out how my child is assessed. I will give suggested practice problems each class and provide an answer key. Whether or not the practice problems are mandatory and graded is up to the parent. I will give in-class assignments such as discovery labs and discussion word problems. I will send out a report on your student at the end of the Eight weeks. It will be up to the parent to decide what to do with the information. Before this class, your student should know basic operations with whole numbers and rational numbers (integers, fractions, and decimal). They should know how to change a fraction to percent to a decimal. How to read data and graphs. I suggest taking Hands-on Fun with Rational Numbers, The Language of Algebra, and Discovering graphs, linear equations, and statistics You can find these classes on my page. Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
For the past 4.5 years, I have worked at a community college. During that time my job consisted of instructing math classes and working with students below college level math and English. During this time I saw a lot of students who were not prepared for the discovery and problem-solving element of math in college. Most students struggle with middle school math concepts in real-world applications. Without this foundation of math fluency and problem-solving student struggle with harder math concepts. As my child starts middle math the urgency of making sure she has a proper foundation of math became real. I decided to homeschool and joined this community of home-schoolers.
I believe all students can succeed when they are taught in a style they understand. I would describe my style as Charlotte Mason or discovery, but I feel students need a mix of drill or classical method for foundational math concepts. If you believe that this style is how your learner understands, then I encourage you to sign up for my course.
