Experiencia de clase

Nivel de inglés: desconocido
Grado de EE. UU. 9 - 12
In this course we will cover
S1 Cell Growth (getting bigger) and Reproduction (making more)
S2 Cell Cycle and when it goes wrong and how it can lead to cancer
S3 Gregory Mendel and basic cell division (Meiosis)
S4 More on meiosis
S5 DNA (the building blocks) and Genes (how it works)
Lab: Human Phenotypes (do you have a widows peak or hair on your lower finger)
S6 Internet work over a Punnett square and a dihybrid cross.
S7 DNA to Proteins (Genes to Proteins)
	With several videos to help
S8 Genetic Change (why cheetahs are so fast and why whales are fat)
S9 Mendel Inheritance and Patterns of Heridity (why families look alike)
S10 Heredity and different rules (Genetics of Sex that is the noun not the verb)
S11 Lab: Royal Hemophilia – No reading or Questions (this covers a bit of history)
S12 Putting it all together Lab: Cat Genetics We will use everyone's favorite furry feline, the domestic house cat, to take a closer look into the subject of advanced genetics. We will look at images of cats, and determine the phenotypes and genotypes of these organisms.

To aid in real world examples, if you can provide pictures of perhaps your cat or a cat you know, to help bring the understanding to the lesson home.

Metas de aprendizaje

The topics covered are the learning goals.
S1 The student will be able to recognize Cell Growth and Reproduction
S2 The student will be able to understand the Cell Cycle and understand what went wrong in the Cell Cycle to result in Cancer
S3 The student will be able to understand the work of Gregory Mendel and recognize Meiosis
S4 The student will be able to understand the basic purpose of Meiosis
S5 The student will be able to look at DNA and Genes
	Lab: Human Phenotypes
S6 The student will be able to do some Internet work over a Punnett square and a dihybrid cross.
S7 The student will be able to start to translate DNA to a Proteins
	Several videos to help
S8 The student will be able to recognize how or why Genetic Change occurs in a population
S9 The student will be able to recognize Mendel Inheritance and Patterns of Heridity
S10 The student will be able to recognize Heredity and different rules (Genetics of Sex)
S11 The student will be able to see Hemophilia in the Royal family lines in Europe
S12 The student will be able to Put it all together in a lab titled cat genetics. Students will be able look at a photo of a cat, and using handouts and the the tools learned in this course. This will end the class as students will identify the phenotype of the cat. If we have time we will use the genotype of the cats to make some theoretical breeding crosses and learn how this results in their offsprings' phenotype. No cats are actually involved in this lab. It is all theoretical in nature.

Orientación para padres
Optional: take a few photos of a local cat or your house cat so we can use it in the class. The class is always more meaningful when we are using real world examples.
Lista de útiles escolares
Handouts for this class must be downloaded. It might make it easier if you could print out the handouts on a full color printer for easy reference. You do not need to print them, but we will reference them multiple times.
