FINANCIAL HARDSHIP SCHOLARSHIPS: In order to continue covering my own expenses in providing quality educational classes, I am no longer able to provide individual student discounts. However, for a limited number of students facing extreme, financial hardship, I can provide a needs-based scholarship. Please reach out to me for more details. COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is designed to nurture a love of writing while supporting and cultivating the skills necessary to write. Writer's Workshop is a 3-part format which includes a mini-lesson (grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, etc.), a period of quiet, independent writing, and finally, a time of celebration and sharing. During independent writing, students will individually, briefly conference with the teacher to brainstorm and flesh out ideas and edit drafts. Students will carry instruction from their teacher-student conference back to expand, revise, and complete their drafts. COURSE STRUCTURE: Monday through Thursday of each week, students will receive a brief, 5-10 minute, mini-lesson. The mini-lesson scope and sequence can be followed in the week-by-week outline below. Following the mini-lesson, students will be given a weekly, writing prompt. They will have about 30 minutes of class time to write. This is a time and space for reflection. If students like, I will play soft, classical music during this time to help foster creativity. As students are ready, I will meet with them and conference about their writing. We will discuss what they have done so far and what areas they will focus on improving. • On Mondays, students prewrite and create their first draft. • On Tuesdays, students revise their drafts. • On Wednesdays, students edit their work. • On Thursdays, students illustrate their work. • On Fridays, students share their completed work and present it to the class!! Mondays through Thursdays, students may earn stars for a variety of positive behaviors such as, but not limited to the following: 1) being kind to others, 2) not interrupting others, 4) having their materials ready, 5) working diligently during class time. Students may lose stars for a variety of negative behaviors including, but not limited to the following: 1) interrupting others, 2) being unkind to others, 3) not doing their work, 4) turning off their cameras without good reason. On Fridays, as writers present their hard work, we follow a different set of expectations which as designed to prepare students for a real presentation environment. Our Friday expectations include the following: 1) staying in our seats while other students are reading their work and taking questions, 2) keeping our hands still, 3) keeping our eyes on the speaker, 4) raising our hands to ask questions after the presentation is over, and 5) thinking of one great question to ask the author about their story. On Fridays, students may and usually do earn additional stars for asking great questions of their fellow authors. Each 5 stars convert to 1 digital sticker. As I frequently remind students, stars and stickers are rewards for excellent work. They are NOT a reflection of how the teacher feels about your writer. She loves ALL of her students! SUBMITTING WORK: Parents are asked to take a quick picture of their students' work following class on TUESDAYS. I will edit and return this work for students to use during class on Wednesday. Please submit your student's work before 5PM CST on Tuesday to insure sufficient return time for class. Please send student work to me through Outschool on Tuesdays. Outschool will probably delete your work. You will probably have to send it more than once. I am sorry. I have sent them my concerns multiple times. ON-GOING CLASSES: This class is an on-going so students may come and go as necessary. I do ask however that students commit to an entire week. For example, if a student only wants to attend class the first and third week of the month that is fine. I do want them to attend class every day of that week however to ensure that they complete the Writer's Workshop process. COURSE PAYMENT & OUTSCHOOL REFUND POLICY From Outschool: Since parents pay a subscription fee every week that their learner is enrolled in the class, Ongoing classes are not subject to the same refund process used by other classes on Outschool. Instead, parents can stop their subscription at any point if they decide that they no longer wish to have their learner enrolled in an ongoing class. Parents receive a full refund of their most recent subscription payment if they stop their subscription within 24 hours of auto-renewal. Note that this condition does not apply if that week’s class meeting has already started. COURSE FEEDBACK: Teacher will provide student feedback on Tuesdays when she returns your learner's edited work. If you would prefer more frequent feedback, please let me know. I am happy to provide it. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Incoming students should have basic, end of 1st grade skills. They should be reading simple CVC words and basic sentences independently. More advanced students, up to the age of 9, are also welcome to polish their skills. Students should be willing to follow basic, classroom instructions. SPECIAL NEEDS: As a traditionally certified, former, Texas public education teacher, Miss Marler is professionally trained and has extensive experience teaching special needs populations. If your writer has a diagnosed or suspected learning disability, IEP, or 504 in place, please share any pertinent information with me before class begins. Miss Marler will make every effort to support parents and accommodate learners, in accordance with what her training, experience, and expertise believe is in the best interest of the child. If you are considering the class and not sure if it will be a good fit for your learner, please feel welcome to message the teacher with a writing sample for a free evaluation and feedback.
