YOUNG WRITER'S WORKSHOP SERIES WITH COURTNEY M.: This series of classes is designed to help your young writer build and maintain a strong foundation in writing strong sentences and paragraphs. With the exception of the one-time Introduction to Writing Sentences class, the ongoing classes feature a new prompt each week so your child may join at any time. Within each level, there is no beginning or starting point. If you need help choosing the best-fit level class for your learner, or if you do not see a time that works for your schedule, please send me a message. ✏️ Level 1: Writing Sentences (Ongoing) - learn and practice writing complete sentences ✏️ Level 2: Writing Super Sentences (Ongoing) - learn and practice writing complete and detailed sentences ✏️ Level 3: Introduction to Paragraphs (Ongoing) ⬅️ This class! ✏️ Level 4: Writing Paragraphs (Ongoing) - learn and practice writing 3- to 5-sentence paragraphs CLASS GOALS: This class will introduce your young writer to writing a paragraph. We will focus on what a paragraph is, how to identify a paragraph, and how to write their own topic, detail, and closing sentences. We will focus on a different type of writing each week covering narrative, informative, and opinion writing. PREREQUISITES: Your child should be comfortable writing sentences. Inventive spelling will be honored since our focus is on learning the structure of a paragraph. Students will be encouraged and supported as they out words phonetically if they are not sure of the correct spelling. IN CLASS: 1. We will begin class by reviewing exactly what a paragraph is. 2. Then, students will work together to identify the parts of a paragraph and then combine parts of a paragraph to create a cohesive paragraph. 3. We will review a checklist to make sure our paragraphs have all of the important parts (a topic sentence, detail sentence(s), and a closing sentence). 4. Next, each student will write their own sentence for a given paragraph with teacher support, as needed. 5. Students will have an opportunity to share their writing at the end of class if they would like to read it aloud and/or hold it up to the camera. MATERIALS NEEDED: For class, your child will need a pencil with an eraser and the writing worksheet. I will post the worksheet in the Outschool classroom 23 hours before class. Alternatively, your child may use whatever writing paper you have at home. Your child is also welcome to bring a stuffed animal writing buddy with them to class. BIWEEKLY FOCUS (listed by the "week of" - Level 4 classes are scheduled during this class's "off" weeks. Due to my schedule and the longer class times, Levels 3 and 4 will alternate weeks in the same time slot. Students who would like a weekly class may sign up for both levels, but students who prefer a focus on just one level would have class biweekly.): ✏️ April 9: Topic sentences (opinion paragraphs) ✏️ April 23: Closing sentences (narrative paragraphs) ✏️ May 7: Closing sentences (informative paragraphs) ✏️ May 21: Closing sentences (opinion paragraphs) ✏️ May 28-August 26: NO CLASSES DURING THE SUMMER ✏️ August 27: Topic sentences (narrative paragraphs) ✏️ September 10: Topic sentences (informative paragraphs) ✏️ September 24: Topic sentences (opinion paragraphs) ✏️ October 8: Closing sentences (narrative paragraphs) ✏️ October 22: Closing sentences (informative paragraphs) ✏️ November 5: Closing sentences (opinion paragraphs) ✏️ November 26: Detail sentences (narrative paragraphs) ✏️ December 10: Detail sentences (informative paragraphs) ✏️ January 7: Detail sentences (opinion paragraphs) RELATED CLASSES: If you would like your child to work on spelling, I have classes available for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. I am also available for 1:1 help upon request. When your child is ready to practice writing a paragraph, check out my Young Writer's Workshop Level 4: Writing Paragraphs class. ➡️ https://outschool.com/teachers/CourtneyM. ⬅️ CLASS POLICIES ----------------- LATE ARRIVALS: I understand that sometimes your child may need to arrive late to class. Please remind your child to sign on quietly without interrupting class to respect the teacher and those who are already in class. I will greet your child when there is a natural stop in whatever we are doing at the time and involve them in the class. MISSED CLASS: Since this is a weekly class, enrolling saves a spot for your child for the whole week and you will still receive the week's materials. No other student may pay for or fill that spot for that week. Sometimes students have to miss one of the days for various reasons, but there is no refund for those missed days. Please send me a message if you would like me to share the class recording for a missed class so that your child can watch the playback. Or, with advanced notice, I am happy to transfer your child to another section meeting that same week. The other option is to unenroll and re-enroll for a different week, but the class might be full. If you prefer that option and there are no spots available when you go to enroll, I can put you on a waiting list and contact you when a spot opens up.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of what is needed to write a paragraph: a topic sentence, detail sentence(s), and a closing sentence.
