Create paper bag puppets in this 4 day art camp. Students will learn the characteristics of tall tales while learning tall tale characters that span all across the USA. This winter camp is a little academic, and a lot of fun!
Class experience
Using a variety of media (books, video), the teacher will share the featured Tall Tale. Students will then color, cut and attach their puppet to the lunch style paper bag. While doing this, the class will discuss the story and what makes it a Tall Tale and not a Fable or Fairy Tale. As time allows, students will be encouraged to make scenery or any attachments needed for the puppets. The teacher will encourage a puppet theater to be created outside of class. I've been teaching a Tall Tale unit in my private school classroom for the past seven years.

There is no assigned homework. However, students will be inspired and encouraged to find resources that could be used to make a puppet theater.Assessments Offered

Scissors, crayons and glue will be needed as well as a lunch paper bag.
Parents could extend the class by procuring a large box, creating a hole with a box cutter and helping your child attach a scrap of material to loosely cover the hole.
