***MATERNITY LEAVE: I will be taking time off for maternity leave beginning in January. At this time, I plan to resume classes in April. I will update any changes here. I hope to see your learners back in class to talk all about mythology and fairy tales soon! :) *** In this class, we will study the folklore and fairy tales from England and gain all the benefits of travel from the comfort of our own homes. Students in this class will learn popular and lesser-known English fairy and folk tales. Your child will learn to apply concepts from the core subjects of social studies, history, and literature. At the end of the lesson, we will develop critical thinking skills by discussing what learners think of specific characters, their actions, and their stories, followed by an analysis of what the stories tell us about the the people who invented them. We will start with a brief overview of what makes English stories unique and what other cultures influenced their fairy tales. We will concentrate on stories that represent important traits and characteristics of English culture. Next, students will hear stories from different time periods and regions. We will focus on the locations of each of these stories and their lasting importance and influence. We close with students sharing and discussing their favorite story or figure from that week. This is a stand-alone class and no previous knowledge or work is necessary, but Story Explorer England Part 1: English History, Legends, and Mythology pairs well with it. They can collect more "Story Explorer" passport stamps by signing up for additional "Story Explorer" classes!

Hi parents and learners! My name is Alexandra and I love stories of all kinds.
I offer classes that survey stories from all over the world, including mythology, folklore, fairy tales, legends, literature, and true history. My classes teach students how to interpret stories in their historical and cultural context. I believe that the best way to learn about history and different cultures is through the stories a country, tribe, or any group of people tell about themselves and pass down to their own children.
I earned my degree in history from the University of California, Riverside, with an emphasis on ancient and medieval history. I studied abroad at the University of Oxford as part of my undergraduate degree.
I have been working with students ages five to eighteen over the last ten years as a teacher’s assistant, substitute, one-on-one tutor, and homeschool teacher.
I look forward to seeing you in a class and sharing stories that matter!
