Class Experience

It is my goal to work with learners that are facing challenges writing sentences and/or paragraphs. In this Multi-Day class, students will use topics that are interesting to them in order to build their confidence in writing complete sentences (animals, games, toys, food, etc.). We will meet twice a week to improve their writing skills. Students will use a Graphic Organizers in each class to organize their thoughts on paper. In this Multi-Day class, students will discuss what a sentence is and how to create their own complete sentences. They will practice using sentences that begin with capital letters and end with punctuation. Students will create interesting sentences using descriptive words/adjectives. Students will be allowed and encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas with their classmates. I will use the teaching method: I Do/We Do/You Do, to guide learners as they begin writing on their own. I believe it is important for learners to actively participate by writing in each class. Students will be encouraged to share their writing with their classmates. This class will start over after 4 weeks. ESL students are welcome.
Class Structure:
(5 mins) - Introductions/Discuss the meaning of Sentences
(5 mins) - Use props to identify words/phrases/sentences
I will create a sentence with the students (I Do).
(10 mins) - Brainstorm chosen topic using a Graphic Organizer
We will create a sentence together (We Do).
Students will write a sentence/sentences independently (You Do)
(5 mins) - Edit sentences/Review what good sentences have/Share with classmates

Week 1 - Students will write about animals. I will choose Tigers and use my stuffed animal to use as an example. Students will learn to use what they see to come up with details about Tigers. We will add four details to our Graphic Organizer/Circle Map. I will encourage students to come up with their own details. Depending on their writing ability, students will write 1 to 4 sentences about Tigers. We will review what a good sentence should have (a capital letter at the beginning, punctuation at the end). If time permits, students will share their writing with the class. Each day, we will use this method to build their writing skills.

Week 2 - Students will bring a toy/stuffed animal to class to write about. We will use the Graphic Organizer/Circle Map to create four details about their animal/toy. I will encourage students to come up with their own details. Depending on their writing ability, students will write 1 to 4 sentences about their animal/toy. We will review what a good sentence should have (a capital letter at the beginning, punctuation at the end). If time permits, students will share their writing with the class.

Week 3 - Students will write about one of their closest friends/family member. We will use the Graphic Organizer/Circle Map to create four details about their friend. I will encourage students to come up with their own details. Depending on their writing ability, students will write 1 to 4 sentences about their friend. We will review what a good sentence should have (a capital letter at the beginning, punctuation at the end). Students will use adjectives to help describe their friend. If time permits, students will share their writing with the class.

Week 4 - Students will write about going to the beach (or their favorite place). We will use the Graphic Organizer/Circle Map to create four details about the beach. I will encourage students to come up with their own details. Depending on their writing ability, students will write 1 to 4 sentences about their friend. We will review what a good sentence should have (a capital letter at the beginning, punctuation at the end). Students will use adjectives to help describe the beach. If time permits, students will share their writing with the class.

At the end of four weeks, students will have more confidence writing sentences. They will be able to identify complete sentences and create their own. Based on their initial writing level, students will be prepared to write a paragraph.

Learning Goals

In this Multi-Day class, students will learn how to take their thoughts and organize them into complete sentences. Students will learn the basic conventions of writing complete sentences. They will learn to use capital letters and punctuation in each sentence. We will discuss using adjectives to create colorful and interesting sentences. The learners will focus on creating sentences independently by practicing in each class. Students will learn to write about things they are familiar with and take that knowledge and write about teacher led topics.
