Write a Story in Six Words or Less: Flex Class

Class

I challenge students to write a story in six words or less. Students will receive 30 prompts (one a day) to practice writing clearly and efficiently. #creative

Class experience

US Grade 3 - 6
The students will practice boiling their ideas down to the core details and allowing the reader to fill in the rest. This will also force students to become better readers as they practice inferring what the six word stories mean. The goal is to get the students to be creative while still writing a story that makes sense. I hope they will use as many sensory details as possible so that students can learn to describe things they taste, touch, hear, and smell as well as see.
I have a Master's Degree in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Spalding University. I love talking about all forms of writing and storytelling! Writing prompts are something I have used many times over the years, and I am excited to share this particular challenge with my students. My goal is to inspire younger learners to discover a passion for writing and help them learn how to take the ideas in their head and put them down on paper. I especially love trying new formats (like a six word story) because you never know what creative idea might show up!
Homework Offered
Students will receive one writing prompt each day. They will write one six word story each day in response to that prompt. By the end of the course, students will have 30 completed six word stories. In addition, each Saturday, they will have access to a short crossword puzzle. There will be approximately four crossword puzzles during the class.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
I will comment on any stories shared in the classroom. I will focus on word choices and descriptions the students did exceptionally well and point out any words or emotions that could perhaps be stronger in future stories.
Grades Offered
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
