Class Experience

I will work on building reading phonics and comprehension skills to improve reading levels in this one-on-one class. This reading tutoring session follows a guided reading model. Students will work on sight words, focus on essential phonics skills, practice using these skills to read an unfamiliar text, work on fluency with familiar texts, and also incorporate these skills in writing. This type of model is teacher led as students participate in various activities such as building words, reading books, and writing sentences. Class is very structured and follows a specific pattern each class. This class is run much like a reading recovery class would be within a school setting. Each class focuses on new sight words, a new phonics skill, and a different book. These books and skills do not have to build on each other and each class can be taken as a stand alone class as each sight word and skill pertain to the book we are reading so as new books are read, new skills will be discussed. Some skills that may be touched on in this beginning level class are sight word fluency, beginning and ending sounds, vowel sounds, building and reading CVC words and digraph and blends. Students in this class should be beginning readers or readers struggling with these skills that can use repetitive practice to build reading confidence.

New York Teaching Certificate in English to Speakers of Other Languages
Hello! Welcome to my English as a New/Second Language (ENL/ESL) Classroom. My love for teaching began years ago. Let me begin by saying that I am Certified ESL teacher, a wife, and most importantly a mother to a vibrant 6-year-old boy and 2 year old as of January 2024. I began my teaching journey in 2012 when I graduated with a BA in Professional Studies with an emphasis in Education and a minor in Spanish. First, I taught at a preschool as a lead teacher in a 2-year-old setting for 4 years. I learned about child development and how language works in the mind at such a young age. This is where I obtain my Child Development Accreditation (CDA). Next, in 2016, I went back to school and received my MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages K-12 (TESOL). I began working in the classroom with grades K-5 and have since extended to middle school 6-8. Today, I hold my professional state license in ESL and National Certification in ESL. In addition, for the past 4 months, I have been teaching online ESL classes. I absolutely love teaching and will teach for the rest of my life. I have seen my students grow from knowing zero English to reading on grade level within 2 years. The approach I take is that students must be able to understand how the English language works. I start with understanding letters and their sounds (Phonemic Awareness). Next, I teach how those sounds can blend to create words (Phonics). Then I slowly began to introduce vocabulary using Total Physical Response (TPR), a research-based strategy to help student retain information by acting the word or word phrase out and using real life pictures based on basic survival skills such as what they are most likely to see around them Then, I have students learn comprehension by using reading strategies such as: questioning, monitor and clarifying, visualizing, decoding, making connections and summarizing. I utilize various scaffolds; props including photos (2D and 3D) and digital resources to engage my students as they read. Finally, I want my students to master fluency. I believe students who learn a second language are absolutely brilliant which makes me appreciate my ESL community. So, following these steps and guides have allowed me to help my students learn English effectively and I want to share the joys of learning ESL with the world! My way of teaching is unique, yet backed by years of research so I know it works! Join me on this journey! You don't want to miss out on this!
