If your students struggles with solving word problems in math, this class is for them! As an educator, I have seen many students who struggle with word problems. Oftentimes, it is not always the math that is difficult, but using comprehension skills to understand what the problem is actually asking the student to do. In this course, we will study key words that help us identify what the problem is asking. Do you need to add, subtract, multiply, or divide? How can you tell? We will work through these questions step-by-step and then solve the word problems. Once the student understands what the problem is asking, we will work through the math steps together. The class size will be kept small, so students will be given individual attention and the opportunity to share their knowledge with the class. Class will be an interactive lecture style, with handouts given to students for extra practice outside of class. Week One: We will focus on key words that indicate addition and subtraction problems. We will go through multiple examples giving each student an opportunity to answer. Week Two: We will focus on key words that indicate multiplication and division problems. We will go through multiple examples giving each student an opportunity to answer.
Learning Goals
Students will use key words to understand how to solve math word problems.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Lindsey Atkins and I am excited to teach your student. I believe learning should be fun, and students are more engaged in their learning when they are having a good time and are interested in the topic they are learning. I keep my class enrollments smaller in order to provide more individualized attention to students and create a more productive learning environment for all.
I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts Education from East Carolina University. I also studied Music Therapy. I have a teaching license in K-12 Theatre Arts and Elementary Education K-6, and currently work as an elementary school teacher. I have experience working with all kinds of learners, and love to teach students who want to learn!
I love music and theatre, they are my passion! I am a singer and I play the ukulele, guitar, and piano. I will offer beginner and intermediate ukulele for all ages, and basic music theory and music reading.
I live in North Carolina and enjoy spending time with my family. I have 8 nieces and nephews from ages 2 to 18! In my free time, I also enjoy playing music, reading, and traveling.
Please let me know if there is a specific topic you are interested in! I am excited to expand my classes and am willing to add classes your learners are interested in.
I look forward to learning with your student!

Class Policies:
1) I strive to keep classes close to the scheduled amount of time, however, classes with low enrollments or especially talkative students may run a few minutes under or a few minutes over.
2) I generally will teach a class no matter the enrollment. However, I will contact you 24 hours before class begins if the enrollment is low and offer to switch your learner to a more full section. I keep my enrollments under six students because I believe it provides a better learning experience for all as I can provide more individualized attention.
3) Classes will begin at the scheduled time, even if all learners are not in the classroom (unless there appears to be a technical issue). I will not contact absent learners during class time so I can focus on the learners who are present.
4) If no learners are in the classroom, I will wait 10 minutes before exiting the classroom per Outschool policy. In this situation, I may contact the families after I have left the classroom to potentially transfer learners to a new section or schedule a make up class.
