This Is the Write Class: Learn All of the Components of a 5 Paragraph Essay

This is a two-week course, and students will be involved in a lecture five days each week. During this 45-minute class, there will be 30 minutes of lecture/instruction and 15 minutes of writing. Students will practice the presented concept at the end of each in-class meeting for days 2-7. A final independent essay will be completed for this course. I will need this assignment turned in by the end of Day 9 class. I will give each parent formal feedback about the writing of each learner. An in-depth description of the material that will be covered is listed below. 

Day 1: What is an essay? How do I improve my writing vocabulary? 
We will explore the different types of essays that students may have to write and tools that they can use to make their writing engaging. 

Day 2: What is an introductory paragraph? What is a thesis statement? 
This class will show the importance of a “hook” to catch the reader’s attention. We will also discuss the “formula” of the thesis statement.

Day 3: What are topic sentences? What are supporting details?
Students will learn how to write topic sentences. They will also learn the significance of supporting details. 

Day 4: What are body paragraphs? What are transition words/phrases?
We will explore how the body paragraphs are related to the thesis statement. Students will also see the importance of using transitional words correctly.

Day 5: How do I transition from one paragraph to another?
I will show the students an easy way to transition from one body paragraph to the next. 

Day 6: How do I write a conclusion?
Students will learn how to write a strong conclusion to an essay.

Day 7: How do I proofread my essay? Do I have final questions about my essay? 
I will give tips on proofreading and turning an average paper into an outstanding essay. I will also have a question and answer session about completing the essay. I will assign an independent essay that will be due at the end of Day 9.

Day 8: Let’s share!
Students will share their introductory essays. I will surprise the students with my own introductory essay.

Day 9: Let’s write!
We will review the steps of writing a 5 paragraph essay, and students will continue to work on their independent essay assignment. This should be completed and turned in at the end of Day 9 class session.

Day 10: Game time
I will read each essay and choose the strongest points from each learner. We will use these literary genius moments during a game to end this class.
