Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 9
This class is part three of a three part course, covering essays seven through nine of the Lost Tools of Writing curriculum.

More than just a composition course, this class will teach students how to think using the five common topics of invention to explore their ideas using a formal process. Student will learn and practice how to generate ideas (invention), organize and outline their ideas (arrangement), and put pen to paper expressing those ideas (elocution).

Using the Step-by-step methods provided in The Lost Tools of Writing curriculum, students will complete three essays. Each essay contains a lesson on invention, arrangement, and elocution. Each essay adds new elements in each canon to develop student writing skills.

Class will meet for 50 minutes once a week for nine weeks. In class, I will introduce the lesson and we will practice the tools together in class in an interactive format (discussion, shared issue and classwork). Students will then complete homework assignments from the Lost Tools of Writing Student Workbook to craft their own essays. This course covers essays seven through nine of the Lost Tools of Writing Level 1 Program.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm a teacher for life! After receiving my Bachelor of Arts in Education, I began my career teaching in a traditional classroom setting. I have branched out to homeschooling my own children, teaching small group classes to homeschoolers, and teaching online classes. I have taught many different subjects to a wide variety of ages . My focus has been on writing, grammar, literature, and rhetoric with a classical approach. I'm a lifelong learner and continue my own education through courses, webinars, workshops, and learning alongside my own children and students. My desire is to help others think and reason well, by reading good books, practicing persuasive writing, and exploring the art of rhetoric. I hope you'll join me!

I live with my husband and three children in the Pacific Northwest. Our family has lived in three corners of the United States; from desert, to tropical, to temperate rainforest. My eldest just graduated and is off to college in the fall. I love coffee, nature, and books!
